Doom is a never-ending adventure. The monsters have swarmed out of the failed UAC stargate technology and mauled and thrashed and eviscerated their way to every corner of the known universe. They've spawned out of control and usurped our civilization and turned it against us like an ugly cancer that will never be expunged. So long as us space marines continue to fight this war, Hell will continue resisting. It doesn't stop. For every shotgun shell, there's another imp. For every conquered military base is another city on fire. For every satanic church invaded, another breed of creatures is summoned. The story goes on and on, growing and expanding into every frontier of our imaginations. Every mission leaves a loose end, and I won't quit until I've seen it all.
I want to be there; when the last building crumbles, the stars burn out, the ashes settle, and the blood on my boots is dry. I want to be there; when the last cyberdemon falls, and I can take my hand off the trigger, drop my chainsaw, and breathe. I want to be there; when there's nothing left to see, every lurking demon has been slain, and every hidden passage is revealed. When the destruction ceases, and every door has been opened, and every dead end has been confirmed, I want to be able to say that I was there. I saw it. I saw it all the way from beginning to end. I killed everything. There's nothing left. At that moment, I will finally be at peace.

That's very different from how I view Doom. In my mind the marine and the monsters are forever trapped in the dimension of fighting. It's not like they hate each other, but there is simply nothing to do in that world but fight. Actually they learned to enjoy the battles and to respect each other a lot. They see it as a game now. A game where you cannot win or lose since everything respawns, so now they are playing it to keep themselves entertained. Also I feel like there is a limited number of existing monsters, and usually when you encounter a cacodemon that's actually the same cacodemon that you've seen in several other maps already. It's just a different, respawned incarnation.
Doom is like a box of toys. Every day you take that box and create a new scenario using the same toys. And every time you feel at home, you feel like the monsters are welcoming you. They are your friends.

I at least try to take certain projects into account. I consider ZDCMP2's hell-generator to be a plotpoint post-D64

That's cute and I hate it Heh, kinda explains why I want my maps to be COLORFUL, while yours are usually so dark and gritty.
