Just a friendly reminder to all doomer's, that depression is a real bitch and many of us have been there. If you don't already know, a tremendous multiplayer Doomer by the name of Demonsphere passed away on Sunday -- sources suggest it was a suicide. We wouldn't be here in the same place today if the Doom community didn't draw us all together. Each and every one of us is part of this community because we love Doom... but most importantly we stayed here for the community. Doom wouldn't be nearly as exciting if we didn't all have the chance to get together and talk about this great game. Sometimes we don't play Doom as often as we think we should. Sometimes we don't make as many maps as the next doom marine, or participate as much on the forums, or join in the community events. Even when we disagree, bicker, talk shit, develop rivalries and fight, each and every one of us is responsible in some capacity for contributing to the fun we've had with this great game. For that we should be forever grateful. So please remember: If you are a Doomer, you are loved.

I may have played online with him a few years back, but I never really knew him that well. It's always sad to hear when a member of the community passes away unexpectedly, and so young. RIP.
What sources indicate that this may have been a suicide?

What sources indicate that this may have been a suicide? This is the Doomworld thread created by Ralphis. In his post he gives out the number for suicide prevention and in his second post mentions how he has been in contact with the family. Great words and sentiment 40, and I want to use this space to say I love you too, I love you miano, I love you Kontra, but I love dn the most don't be jealous guys 😜 In all seriousness guys (sorry to any gals reading, this is a bloke thing) never be so insecure in your manhood to give a brother some warmth and good heartfelt words. Reach out if you think someone is doing it rough, it doesn't cost anything. Life is tough for everyone and we all a need a leg up at times. As an aside if you've ever had the pleasure of me calling you a cunt it's because you needed it and not to put you down. That's all. Cunts.

Thanks for this, I think it's sad to go over what could've been done for people who may have gone this way. It just happened recently I was thinking how little it seems we show our appreciation for one another. I'd like to express my gratitude for such an amazing community that produces much talent, and beyond what we see and play in Doom it's nice to know there's a face behind all this action. I'm saddened that it would go this way for some people we wouldn't otherwise have known to reach out to - it reminds me of when I had an exchange with phobosdeimos1 shortly before his passing, and if I had known as such I would have approached things differently. Of course it's impossible for anyone to know such things, but I think it's all the more reason why it's important also to address the individuals themselves aside from any of the content (if any) produced. If it's players, mappers, musicians or onlookers...whatever they may be, I hope we can learn to bear this burden together of whatever any individual person might be going through.
Honestly, there are times I wish I had deeper relations within the community, and times I wish I could be there for people, but it's difficult to express these things through text...

Is "you are loved" what depressed people want to hear? In the state they are in they probably can't really feel that love. They might think like "man, all these people love me and yet I still feel like shit? I'm the worst". I wonder if depressed people feel more comfortable when they hear cynical stuff and bad news because those align with their current world view better. When you tell them "you're awesome!" you get "no, I fucking suck" in return, but if you approach them less optimistically and don't act like a cheesy cartoon hero perhaps you might actually get a conversation going? Or something. I don't really know how their brains work.

It probably works better in person Memfy, because if they come at me with that kind of attitude then I'm within arms length of giving them a whack across the ear...
Obviously it's not as simple as telling a person they are loved or that you love them. Some will respond well to that, some will respond better to tough love. Then there are others that just seem hopeless, but if they're family or close friends you can't give up on them no matter how difficult. When I was a wee lad going through all the usual teenage melodramatic bullshit I fell into a deep depression. One day when I thought I was calm and speaking rationally I told my mother that I hated life, myself and wanted to kill myself. I wasn't expecting her response, which was furious anger and her telling me that if I wanted to die then she brought me into this world and that she could take me out if I wanted to die so much. I ran for my life and bolted myself inside my room... it became obvious to me that I feared for my life and actually didn't want to die! While depression continued somewhat after that time, I never again reached the kind of depths that caused me to seriously consider suicide.

Is "you are loved" what depressed people want to hear? Truthfully, I don't know. What is going on in each person's head varies from person to person. The way depression is described in the medical community (and seems accurate to me) is that it's a condition that involves a high sensitivity to negative stimulation and a dull or muted sensitivity to positive stimulation. Some people have chronic depression as a bi-product of some other psychological condition, or sometimes as a result of a head injury. A Doomer Boards thread alone might not be enough to talk someone out of jumping off a bridge. It's true, that this is a widely disputed psychological issue. I've seen some very convincing articles that attempt to persuade people out of overmedicating themselves because they are feeling sad. Often these prescriptions cause other harmful side effects to your brain activity, and studies have shown that depression can often be fought by fruitful conversations and social activity, and/or healthy diet and exercise. I just know from experience that there were times where I felt like I was hated by the doom community, which is really painful considering that I love playing this game and talking to people about it. I really don't like that someone has to actually die to be reminded that this could happen to anyone from the community, no matter how much I may like or dislike them in the moment. No matter who you are, I have a deep amount of respect and appreciation for you just because you take the time to be here and make this community fun to be a part of. Not a lot of people get attention unless they make amazing maps or music or programs, etc. Sometimes you see these people in a "grass is always greener on the other side" sort of way and it can be depressing when you feel like you're unimportant in the community. But that's not true. Every one of us is important for the sake of forming this awesome Doom community that we have been a part of for decades. Just being here with us makes you awesome.

I missed that information that Ralphis mentioned that he contacted Demonsphere's family. Thank you for summing that up. I love you too Glenzino... in no-homo way lol

Poking my head in here as somebody who's been told that their depression and anxiety are basically symptoms, I don't feel qualified to say what the depressed mind works like... But it is quite easy in my own mindset to dismiss people being nice as meaningless platitudes.
It is a struggle and not just for those suffering. Those around us have to deal with the negativity too, which I personally do feel bad about. Like, it'd be "easier" to be depressed without dragging other people down or garnering so much attention, but on the other hand it's much easier to spiral without people around. Difficult balance to strike, I suppose, particularly as solutions seem pretty vague. I've been told my issues stem from being a sperg (to use the Internet-approved lexicon) in the wrong environment. What they can't tell me is what the right environment is, so I'll just have to keep trying new ones until one fits... Or I die of old age or something.
I'm sorry to hear it's been terminal for somebody else (as is all too frequently the case) - I hope one day there will be some kind of understanding that can really help.

I'm heavily depressed. Please don't ask to elaborate or to talk, I don't have the strength to explain anything. Just say something nice about me (but only if it's honest).

@memfis Here's something I wrote for you a long time ago but it's still true memfy baby: Memfis, otherwise known as kuchitsu when he's feeling naughty, has been making us smile and think on various forums since joining Doomworld in 2007. With his polite and playful manner and his curious nature his presence raises the mood on any forum thread or chat room he’s involved in. He is a prolific demoer, with 499 demos at the DoomEd Speed Demos Archive at the time of this writing. Through these demos you can see the calm mastery he displays as a Doom player. His fdas are a thing of beauty. Although he's never blessed us with a megawad, he has released a vast number of wads for Doom as well as contributed to a variety of other projects, his name is on 76 entries currently in the idgames archive. The most notable of these is his six map Kuchitsu which won a Cacoward in 2013. But don’t mention that fact too much to him, it ranks amongst the least favourite of his own works. His maps tend to be cleanly textured, display an advanced understanding of monster and item placement, are tastefully designed, and above all else they're super fun to play. Even his reality maps. For mine however the most valuable thing for the community that memfis, with a lowercase m when he's being all casual and chatty or Memfis with a capital M when it's time to get serious and business-like, does is give useful feedback on maps which are usually accompanied by his trademark fdas. You'll often find him around freshly released works, where the feedback at that stage of a wad's life is critical and helps boost a mapper's drive to better their work. He does all of this while staying incredibly humble and doesn't understand what all of the fuss is about, which is a big part of memfy's charm and keeps him being a highly sought out playtester, contributor and a pillar of society. Random Memfis maps:DOOM=DOOMThe Shores of Russia E2M3New reality mapsKukukuAs a special bonus, here is the map made by Skillsaw for the Secret Santa project where he mapped in the style of Memfis: Nashville, Tennessee

@memfis PUNCH DEPRESSION IN THE FACE! DEPRESSION IS JUST A DEMORALIZING ILLUSION CONCOCTED BY THE FORCES OF EVIL! Never give up! ROAR! Blast on your favorite anime songs! SHOOT THOSE DEMONS IN THE FACE! Do you want a hug? I'll give you a hug. *HUUUG* That good enough for you? No? Hug a teddie bear. I cuddle mine when I feel like I can't make human connections. It's okay to stumble now and then, as long as you remember to get back up and stand on your own two feet. Never give up! I'll never give up on you! We'll never give up on you! WE ALL BELIEVE IN YOU! We'll make it and make the good, good. Fight the good fight, but don't forget to take lovely naps too.
You are awesome! You are precious! You are the one and only GREAT AMAZING @memfis!

Sorry to hear memfy! You’re doing the right thing by reaching out (even virtually) to people and being honest about what you need.
Speaking honestly, I’ll say that sorta-collab’ing with you on Coffin Curse was a real game-changer for me. I was pretty star-struck after years of lurking in the Doom community and seeing your name around. And that map is a good one too—singled out in several of the write ups I’ve seen for the set (most recently Not Jabba’s). Finishing up your wip also taught me a neat little trick for “lower-to-lowest floors” actions that I’ve probably used in most maps since. So I consider you a valuable teacher in the course of my own personal Doom mapping history!

Thx guys. Yesterday was so bleak it's like all positive feelings disappeared from the world. I was sitting at a cafe, looking at people smiling and talking to each other, and thinking that they all must be acting since it's impossible to feel good. I wanted to take off their masks and prove that they are all dead inside. But I think I can believe in their smiles today. Sleeping also helped, Cuppy is totally right about that.

@memfis you are a very good poster and an excellent mapper, always striving to make something different and with a deep knowledge of Doom and different styles of mapping (be it authors, wads or eras), and I like alot that you are able to capture the spirit of what you are inspired to when you do it but with your own twist. And I enjoy of course your original works. I think this to very few people I "know" on the internet but I think that if I knew you irl I would like to be your friend, it's not that you sound or seems like a very good guy to be around but I feel that you are one. I'm late and maybe I said too much, and remember that for the long loney nights you can always buy a dakimakura.

Memfis is a name in the Doom community that is recognized, when somebody plays a map by Memfis they are getting good fucking maps made by a refined veteran of Doom, Memfis knows what players want, Memfis knows what you like because Memfis made what you like.
Less a mapper, more an artisan.
