I have an idea for a game.
I like the idea of the DWIronman competition (play the given wad without saves, upload your demo / post your stream) but I have some tweaks.
Ironman doesn't really have any tiers for differently skilled players, so with the selected wads being longer and more difficult, not as many people are able to participate without getting disqualified really early. So in this game, instead of assigning a wad, players will be able to choose any wad they feel comfortable playing with.
At the start of every competition, players get to choose a background music selection (from a small curated catalog of albums or music videos) Then they have to play whatever wad they choose. Preferably something they've played already that they think they can play competently with. Also, preferably something that stylistically plays well with the music (frantic music goes with frantic wads, chill music goes with chill wads, etc.)
The idea would require the following:
- A committee of people to choose good music (music that pairs well with casual doom gameplay, diverse genres, easy listening, etc.)
- Players to play casual doom with -nomusic turned on and the selected music running in a separate application
- Viewers to watch the recorded demos/videos/streams in sync with the music and vote on which player gave the "best performance"
The committee
1. On a later date, I'll post a thread where anyone can tag which member they think should be nominated to be in the committee
2. There will probably be a limit for how many people can be in the committee (I'm thinking like 2-5 people?) Whoever gets the most tags AND accepts the nominations gets to be in
3. The committee can decide on music together or you can rotate members to pick the music themselves for each event
4. Members should vote on who has the most diverse/interesting range of music preference to listen to with Doom
5. If you want to be in the committee, you can 'campaign' for it by posting music that you think is good in the music subforum
The players
1. Pick any wad you want that you feel would be a good pairing with the music
2. Play the wad saveless for the duration of the music album. Your recording time should be the same length as the album and preferably no much shorter or longer.
3. Try to 'dance' along to the music as you play for a better score. (Play aggressively at the fast parts, and calmly for the quiet parts, etc.)
4. Record your playthrough with the music volume turned down and the album playing on a browser window or other application.
5. If using youtube or twitch, DO NOT include the music in your video or stream's audio for DMCA reasons, your video will get muted or taken down. The viewers will pair the recording with the music themselves. Just have the music playing in headphones or something so you can listen to it yourself but not include it in your capture's audio output.
The viewers
1. As the demos/videos get posted, watch them from start to finish with the music playing in sync with the demo/video
2. If you really enjoyed watching that player play that wad with the particular music, cast your vote for them as the winner for the competition
3. You can watch any of the players you want, you don't have to watch all of them.
4. At any event, you can post wad requests you think someone should play with the music to get your vote.
