Really interesting. Haven't gotten around to fucking playing the damn thing properly yet because #worksucksass, but looking forward to it based on this. Seems like a proper spiritual successor to DoomRL.

I buyed dis
just had my best run so far, got up to Io Nexus. Only playing on medium because I want to win (playing on easy is beneath my dignity). Melee build, marine. It turns out that the key to a successful melee run is not to buy the melee perk (Rip and Tear), but rather to concentrate on bonus health and armour. My other thought is that shotguns are OP.
edit: not bothered by the fact dodging is RNG based even though it is otherwise very similar to DoomRL (as far as I remember, haven't played DRL for 4-5 years maybe). Funny how naming things sets up a whole host of expectations

dmdr, shotguns deal only 1/3 of damage against armor (also crap against robotic enemies), unless you pick the skill that converts their damage type to pierce, or use plasma shotguns (same damage qualities as pierce, that is designed to melt/penetrate armor). Slash-based shotguns should be useless from Io onwards. I wonder how would you hack CRI bot with a slash shotgun. What makes shotguns seem overpowered early game is that they don't have a hit/miss chance and thus should be unaffected by pain, a percentage of damage is always dealt. When you are hit, especially if engaging multiple enemies, pain racks up fast, making anything but shotgun be total crap at hitting whatever is hitting you. I guess melee also doesn't have the hitting problem, didn't use melee in this game yet.

Fuck it is annoying to die/restart in this game, so many screens pop up consecutively, both on death and on starting new game.

don't forget that the 'Army of Darkness' perk converts their damage type to pierce (my second best run used this and it was ridiculous), and you get a free plasma shotty on Io L1 anyway. They're probably not OP if you're not playing Marine but I haven't really done that yet -- I've experimented a little with Scout but nothing serious yet, prefer Marine's perks tbh.
Melee is awesome once you've racked up enough damage avoidance/mitigation perks. I was one-shotting ravagers and two-shotting basically everything else with my nice machete (including CRI bots once I upgraded to a katana). Useless in the early game but if you're not using shottys then you're gimping yourself anyway so oh well.

If anyone unlocks Angel of Hubris challenge, which makes you start on Io with your choice of exotic weapon, a piece of marine armor and no experience, I currently had the best luck with Marine class and 7.62 Gattling. Not 7.62 pierce rifle, not CRI 7.62 Riot SMG. Naturally, the next thing is pickup plasma rifle and start modding it. Third weapon: rocket launcher maybe, plasma shotgun not good enough (low range, no time to mod). Plasma shotgun still miles ahead of normal shotguns though, which are gonna be useless for this challenge.
7.62 Gattling has those nice properties that: 1) you start with 200 ammo of 7.62 caliber instead of 100 for, say, armor-piercing 7.62 rifle. Although gattling uses 6 points of ammo per initial burst 2) has a built-in sustain after firing until you reload (no need to constant shoot). This allows to kill crowds before they land a hit on you, which is important for low-level character skipping two episodes and confronting enemies that have high range, armor melting (plasma), poison, etc. Not good enough for medusas though (fuck those things, and they also seem to heal back when they are outside of combat... really, exalted ravagers aren't much a threat when you have gattling as a regular medusa is)
By best luck I mean getting to the last Io level, after completing which one would leave Io for next episode. Haven't survived that level yet. Basically, I'm bored doing the whole campaign, as well with rng I get starting on Europa per Angel of Confidence, as I did get to final boss one more time, on Angel of Confidence, dying to poison. I was heavily armored, so heavily every enemy did only 1 point of damage to me, but since they inflicted poison, that did 16+ amount of damage (ignoring armor apparently, also it seems if you are hit with poison you have to move), and I also was ammo-starving due to using all things 7.62 caliber, including some trigger-happy gun. Too lazy to post analysis, but keep in mind poison is a thing, and might circumvent your armor toughness... perhaps getting a sealed mask is preferrable to combat helm despite the lower protection OR one could pick Toxicologist skill (if playing Technician), but that also requires sacrificing another skill point for that useless prerequisite that syphons power of machines.
If using SMGs as a Technician for Angel of Confidence, Son of A Gun Lvl 2 seems to be needed before Sustained Fire Lvl 1 even, that is even if you use rifles as you are still auto-calibrating your 7.62 assault SMG you crafted on Europa's first level.

dmdr, ah yes, if using Army of Darkness, shotguns will be good of course. Still interested in winning the game as SMG-using Technician as I got close (twice to final boss, main campaign and Angel of Confidence, medium difficulty). But starting on Io per Angel of Hubris, Technician really has poor survivability and SMGs are a joke without all those pistol and sustained fire skills. Marine + gattling + plasma rifle seems to be the way to go on Hubris.

I'm doing a medium Scout/crit-fishing run now and it's a pretty good build so far, although I only just finished Callisto (I did Callisto Anomaly though and it wasn't too bad, I was wasting arch-reavers in 3 shots. The Scout's stealth class ability is better than Marine's adrenaline even if Marine has better perk selection overall). I'm only really coming 'on-line' now though, you need quite a few perks to get your crit chance up (Son of a Gun, Eagle-Eye>Deadly Precision. Should grab some Executioner too for those close range kills), but the .44's high base damage makes shit quite bearable. I'm using a shotty as my backup because of course I am.
SMGs kinda suck; I've had decent success with normal pistols though. The 9mm Calibrated exotic, if you can find it, is really really good and viable into Io assuming you don't run out of ammo for it (definitely an issue). The Gunslinger perk is rad as well esp. when using ammo efficient weapons but you've probably noticed that already.
re: poison, I've done a bit of reading on the net and there's a guaranteed ENV Armour drop in the C-something Chaos Biolabs on Europa which makes you basically immune to all on-going status effects. I found it when I was playing my aforementioned melee build but ignored it in favour of a sweet unique armour I'd found in an earlier level (called Shadowhunter or something Shadowcloak, it grants free stealth on kills). My run ended when I died due to (drum roll please)... poison. Obviously.

run over, chaingunned to death in a storeroom off Mephitic Mines L1. Was doing well actually, could have survived the encounter if I'd stealthed instead of healed. Yet Another Stupid Death. Oh well, life goes on, and I was struggling with poison damage so I probably would have died soon anyway (I figured the mines had a decent chance of dropping a poison resist item, like an artifact or something) (fuckin toxic reavers man). Master skill was Sniper which is quite nice at L2 with the crit damage bonus and I was trying to diversify into melee a bit for that HOT ROOM CLEARING ACTION since I'd grabbed a few dodge perks as well, plus I found a large axe which has 90 slash base damage (!!!).

dmdr, just so you don't underestimate poison, I'll post some stuff from my best Angel of Confidence run (starts on Europa with no experience), where I died in final boss room. Here is what I got to and finished Io Lvl 1 with: And here's the mortem:Having ran out of grenades, and ammo reserves, tried to kill final boss at all costs. He had only "###" remaining and there was something like damage gate: 80 I don't remember, but well, I couldn't spare to move and was badly poisoned already. Notice how nothing but poison can deal me more than 1 point of damage, and so poison ends the run (and ammo shortage). Had bad luck with 7.62 drops, as far as I remember, starting from mid-Io and surely for hell almost none on Dante. Anyway it seems focusing on one ammo pool for all weapons doesn't really work, I want something like an AV3 rocket launcher as a side weapon lol (which also makes one less reliant on grenades)... Otherwise, I even managed to kill medusas without getting cursed, which obviously came at the cost of grenades. Too bad didn't have pistol AMP. Also, SMGs are only good when you have both pistol accuracy and crit buffing skills as well as Sustained fire and the like, basically the idea is that SMGs double as pistol and automatic weapons, so by combining skillsets for buffing either you buff SMGs. P.S. Hate is stronger than Love, in my experience (talking about the guns, Hate and Love are both uniques, and protagonist seems to be happier picking up Hate. Might have just rolled a better phrase, not necessary intentional).

not bad, that's a better run than any I've had so far -- I'd say relying on the one ammo pool was your downfall though. diversity is strength! (in this game anyway) Currently I'm doing an endless run as a Survivor Marine. I've reached dungeon level 25 which has earned me the bronze and silver badge (which should be enough to raise my rank and unlock Nightmare!, although I'm still playing on medium lololol) but decided to take a break for a while. I'm at a point now where I'm having to use healing items fairly regularly so I don't think I'll survive that much longer, unfortunately. It's been a very lulzy run because I'm still using the shotgun I found on level 1 to massacre almost everything, although I did upgrade from my 9mm pistol when I found the CRI Blaster (which is a plasma pistol that regenerates ammo). edit: played a bit more, died. Burned to death by an Archmedusa. Fuckin things Mark Taggart, level 18 Marine, killed on Endless L29 by a bushfire.

Yeah, there is a scarcity of heal from Io onwards, that is sometimes only a healing item pops and no healing orb.
Also if you hit dungeon level 25 on endless, you should be able to reach final boss on main campaign. Whether you survive it or not is another thing.
Fun fact is that also class randomizers get unlocked when you unlock things, one is obviously simply random pick in a class selection, but another is called Fated and means also all but one mastery, chosen at random, are removed from your run. Didn't try that, looks like a pain.
Also for the last few days I had no luck getting far into my runs, I guess I rush things. Although almost surviving Io on Angel of Hubris was good, as it is a pain to start on Io without experience, even with a free gattling.

I got to Dante Station L2 (second level of fourth episode) on main campaign on Hard, Technician class. And died there (fuck warlocks in melee, and pain). This run has the highest score of all (3796 points, the next best is 3198 on medium).
I will retrieve mortem from the other computer at some later time. By the way, mortem can also be found in game's folder, until overwritten, but thanks for the clipboard tip, it works too.
Also, Sealed is not necessary, Filtered (partial poison protection) is enough for most cases, and you can find it on more durable armor (unfortunately, couldn't move my gadgets to combat helm I have found filtered on). Because damn mask with a Sealed status ages like fuck from combat, and has too little mod slots (only one? to double its durability, which even then is not much!).
CRI 7.62 riot SMG modded with Auto-calibrated and Critical 25 (Whizkid L3 allows to slap extra slot) fucking kills armored ravagers and medusas in one hit, if not in pain, assuming the usual pistol+sustained skill set is developed. Too bad can't one shot archmedusa, and to bad pain is so fucking much (reaver's tendon relic FFS, prolonges pain twice as much but gain 15% speed increase). Definitely needed pain reduction, but couldn't craft it at a time, swift was necessary back then.
P.S. Trials, unlike main campaign and also Challenges (Angel of whatever) have Beyond instead of Dante, you were doing Haste Trial, therefore you faced a different endboss and a bit different set of levels, because Beyond's and Dante's endbosses are different as far as I heard.

yes I know. the Beyond boss is the Summoner who was pretty feeble tbh; he summons dudes but doesn't seem to attack himself, I won by dropping smoke grenades on his minions and shooting the Summoner while they couldn't retaliate (I had a few of these since Scout's stealth ability makes them kinda redundant. I'm glad I didn't throw them away though). The seed was very generous with grenades too, I had heaps of kraks to use on the CRI Bots and Archmedusas which helped a lot. I still won, and that's what counts!
edit: another day, another run. got done in by a combination of hubris due to my nice unique melee weapon and NO AMMO this time, should've done the mainline run on Io and got those sweet, sweet energy cells so I could spam my plasma rifle all day long. never mind

So here is the mortem regarding that run on Hard I mentioned before: Some kind of shotgun that converts pain to damage bonus (there is a mod that enables that IIRC) would have been nice in that situation, cause I was in great pain and couldn't hit warlock (with aura) standing next to me. Also if number of mods on some items surprises you, it is because I had Whizkid Lvl3, which allows to add one extra mod onto anything that allows mods (haven't seen if it affects unique weapons, though). Also yeah, I forgot to visit special level on Callisto. MediTech armor also good for Technician, cause robotic enemies drop power orbs, and MediTech allows them to also heal a bit (up to 5 points of health per orb).

Can now confirm that a 9mm SMG can take down Callisto Anomaly on Hard with only an Extended Mag 5 and Calibrated 1 mods on a weapon, and Son of a Gun L2 and Sustained Fire L1 character skills.
The strategy: take cover behind first pillar (I've approached this area from the bottom this time) and let spawning enemies come at you. They only spawn as you move though, so if you killed one, be sure to move to adjacent cell and back behind cover, so that the next one spawns - the protagonist will say his "level clear" line when all are killed.
Now, of course, if you were unlucky to not have a mod station generated for one of preceedings levels then shit sucks, you might not be able to clear Callisto Anomaly... or maybe the cover method solves it anyway. I don't remember the first pillar being always in this comfortable position, though. There are two paths to this center area: from top and from bottom, maybe pillars are random generated so that one of them is next to either one?

Didn't touch Jupiter Hell in a long while. Jupiter Hell is v1.3 already, so I've installed v1.3 update. It seems anti-Russian sanctions didn't block downloading updates of the purchased games on Gog, good. Anyway, had a run recently where I got to to the final boss of normal game again, I don't remember whether that was medium or hard, but it was complete bullshit, he now shoots 3 rockets (I don't remember him doing that) at various cells and that has _infinite range_, meaning that emergency teleporter actually doesn't help at all. What was worse is that pre-boss I was doing fine. I don't know how to properly train to survive this bullshit, since trials alter the boss to Summoner, and he is a paper bag difficulty-wise, at least on MEDIUM: Vigilant, level 17 Marine, defeated The Summoner against all odds.

Basically, same run that dmdr did long time ago. So much health left in my inventory, lol. What was this joke of a boss? Mooks on the previous level were harder than this. So, I need to find a way to train for the Harbinger boss (the proper boss non-trial game has) without having to survive the entire length of uncut game just to try a new strategy on him. I forgot which boss do the challenges (another group of game mutators distinct from trials) feature, but I have both Angel of Confidence and Angel of Hubris unlocked, guess could try to reach the boss from there...
