You know which games I am talking about. Those that have no story, no characters, nothing other than gameplay, and the gameplay itself is usually simplistic, takes very little time to learn, and is rather repetitive. And yet, somehow these games are quite addictive and have you play them again and again.
Some of my favorites come from Pop Cap - Zuma (and the sequel - Zuma's Revenge), Plants vs Zombies (the original one, not the commercialized sequel, which is based around micro-transactions), and Bejeweled 3 (the first 2 games didn't have enough variety to keep my interest for long).
I think what's common in all these games is that the gameplay is tight, and the music is awesome and completes the atmosphere very well.
I enjoy Angry Birds series as well, but there is a lot of inconsistency with the difficulty of the levels. Some you can complete easily with 3 stars on the first try, while the others might take 50+ attempts just to win, because you either have to be pixel-perfect, or find a very obscure solution. As a result, I get frustrated and tired much faster.

I really like rail shooters like time crisis and house of the dead 2.

Well, Doom and Zuma do have a story, actually, it is written in intermissions.

Well, Doom and Zuma do have a story, actually, it is written in intermissions. Oh yeah, the Zuma story is quite amazing. The narrative is given in a form of speech that I can describe as a mix between Yoda style and terrible foreign speaker grammar. To this day I remember the pearls like - "There is defect for your thinking!"
- "Your power namely that is large!"
- "You the final temple must fight in order to take the cover of position of my jail!"
- "Your extreme power is not possible to be defeated!"
I think it was like 15 years ago that I beat the game (original Zuma) the first time. I was first introduced to it by a friend, and we both were playing it in parallel on our computers for a while. He got stuck on World 9, and I eventually managed to beat that, got stuck on World 12 for a while. Then the first time I got past 12-7 I had 2 lives left, and on my second attempt had a lucky run of the colors to be able to beat 13-1. It felt like a tremendous accomplishment. Then I realized, that if you start on World 1 (and not on 12), then by the time you get to 12, you usually have enough extra lives accumulated to boost your chances. Just earlier this year, I managed to beat the entire game without losing a single life. Something I will probably never try again. I felt I was on a roll, so decided to try the Iron Frog mode of "Revenge". What do you know? Got all the way to level 10 on the first try and died.

I like puzzle games. The Incredible Machine series is one most people would be familiar with. The ones where you repair Rube Goldberg machines to accomplish some mundane task. But there are more to puzzle games than that. Earlier this year I beat The Fool's Errand and Are We There Yet?, which are both puzzle games with a long overarching story. Errand is the better, but also more difficult of the two games. Both have way too many word puzzles in them. (crosswords, word searches, cryptograms, engima machine) Also recently, I became aware of an old shareware puzzle/logic game maker that's still going. Everett Kaser Software. Guy does stuff primarily based on Sherlock Holmes themes, but he's got a lot of non-Holmes ones too. As logic games they're all about figuring out a set of facts based on clues given to the player at the start of the game.
Also enjoy the odd board or card game against an AI. Mostly just stuff my unintelligent self can grok the rules for, like Gin, or Rummy, or the board game version of Rummy.

I'm a big fan of the old school arcade games with little to no story line.
- Asteroids - Frenzy
- Missile Command - Burgertime - Antarctic Adventure - Galaga / Galaxian
- Dig Dug
Some desktop PC games worth mentioning:
- Space Cadet 3D Pin Ball - Minesweeper - Solitaire / Spider Solitaire

What's a casual game nowadays? Does Spelunky count? Or is it an indie?
p.s. The only casual game (where casual also means lame and easy) on my mobile I somehow play is Hill Climb Racing 2

How about graphic adventure games? I just finished Snatcher for the SEGA CD using an online emulator playing it on and off for a few days.

Just started Front Mission - Gun Hazard and wasn't expecting to play it as long as I did as it's pretty cool and has great art too. I really like the way the mech handles as you can really feel the weight to your movement. Will continue. Semi-unrelated art from Assault Suits Valken: Mechs are so cool.

Beat Hexen 2 with the Necromancer (I wanted to play it to look at the art) and I had a good time! It's a good game.
The first world started to be addictive with knowing I have so many things that go certain places. It's "questing" in a sense. I got stuck for the first time in the Egyptian world and used a walkthrough at that point to save myself the keyboard face massage (don't do that it sounds unsanitary). My only regret is not using the Ovinomancer wand more as I only got a single use from it and that was on accident when I was spamming Discs of Repulsion.
