Is that standard vanilla behavior to allow the player to save/quicksave after they have been killed? What's the point of that?
I vaguely remember a warning message telling you you can't save when you're dead but I just ruined my save in a megawad playthrough I was doing by accidentally quicksaving when I meant to quickload. What the hell, prboom?

Chocolate Doom 3.0 and Crispy Doom don't let you do that, but restart the current map from pistol start after entering new slot's name (I tested normal save only). Save action is silently aborted (no message) and the slot is reverted to original name and content.
Prboom-plus 2.5.1.5 overwrites your save with a new one, and will faithfully display the palette tint on level load if one was still applied at the moment of saving while dead.
I can't recall how vanilla behaves. Unfortunately, Choco can't be relied to preserve the vanilla's behaviour, since he freezes action when escape menu is brought (to start), while the vanilla never did.

I can't recall how vanilla behaves. Vanilla as well as some other DOS ports (BOOM, MBF) behave like your description of Choco 3.0 and Crispy, i.e., silently abort the save and restart the level.

Well, this deserves a bug report to whoever maintains PrBoom-plus now.
