I imagine for most users here, being DOOM fans, FPS is going to be at the top or close to the top. What game genres do you like other than that?
For me it's platformer action games (both 2D and 3D). They give me just the right balance between challenge and relaxation. The action is usually divided into short sequences, which can be beaten before frustration creeps up. Puzzles, if present, are typically not too difficult, but add enough variety without keeping you stumped for hours and days (like happens sometimes in adventure games). A well-designed platformer will allow you to both enjoy the action and the environment (and if it has a good story - that's a nice bonus).

FPS shooters with compelling story/RPG elements and Metroidvanias.

Only the oldschool FPS and then some RPGs. And then various indie platform/action games.

I'm going into a weird place where I don't really enjoy playing games as much as I enjoy watching other people enjoy games. I think as I gravitate into my destiny as a doom content creator I'm always interested in learning what people enjoy about their game playing experiences so I can attempt to imitate it the best I can in Doom, since the Doom editor has become a second language for me.
This has allowed me to have a new appreciation for games of all different genres even though I personally wouldn't commit the time to play them myself. I haven't really played a game seriously in a long time, and only really play games that are easy to pick up and put down in a brief time, like tetris or contra or streets of rage.

Although I do sometimes play long games, I have periods where all I ever want to play are casual games, like Zuma or Bejeweled.

dr_st There's only so much a youtube let's player can communicate about their thoughts and feelings about a game as they play. I do get that it's drastically different to live the experience first hand. I do feel like I miss out on some great stuff because of it. I just don't feel like I have the time or patience to commit to that. It's just a side effect of the quality of life I've chosen for myself, unfortunately.

I don't have much interest in Let's Plays, but I do enjoy sometimes watching reviews of games. Sometimes I watch reviews of games I know well, just to see if people offer some interesting insights. I also had situations where a good review of an old game I had known about but never played before stirred my interest enough to try it out.

First person anything. FPS mainly obviously but I will play anything that's in first person since I just prefer that perspective. Also love sandbox or open world RPGs. I've always wanted to make an FPS RPG based off of Nine Inch Nails's Year Zero alternate universe. If only I had a game studio...

Yeah, FPS RPG games are not something that you can reasonably make as an "indy" developer. It's a rather expensive genre to produce. In the past several months I've been giving attention to the point-n-click adventure genre that I've avoided for a long time - and for the first time played classics like the first two Monkey Island games, and Day of the Tentacle. It's a good thing these games have beautifully done remastered versions.

Me and a friend of mine were supposed to be working on a top down retro style rpg but they've been lazy and haven't gotten around to working on the codding so I've got nothing. I just suggested to them today we make a strife style Doom total conversion but I don't know if that idea will go anywhere.
I really, REALLY, want to properly develop at least one game in my life, but I know I can't to it professionally.

Is there a reason why you guys weren't using an engine? Like RPGmaker, OHRRPGCE or one of the others? Its not too difficult to make a WRPG in one of those.

In addition to FPS, and RPGs, I like turn-based, and real-time strategy games. As well as city-builder simulation games.

Although I'm terrible at them, I do enjoy RTS like Warcraft and StarCraft, if only for the story. I still prefer turn-based like Heroes Might and Magic.

As good as I think I am, there is always someone that completely houses me. Happened a lot in Starcraft, back in high school, back when I was using a 56k modem to play with kids from high school. I liked to play as the Protos. But kids who played well with the Zerg, were always the best.

I used to love RTS games, however, the last RTS game I really got into was C&C Generals Zero hour. All newer RTS games have just seemed somewhat generic. Maybe I outgrew them or maybe there has been nothing new under the sun since then.

Maybe I outgrew them or maybe there has been nothing new under the sun since then. It may be a little bit of both. I actually never got into RTS at all other than Warcraft and Starcraft. Somehow those set in realistic worlds, like the C&C series never appeared to me. I like WC/SC for the fantasy/sci-fi worlds, more than for the games themselves. I only ever play against the AI - I wouldn't even feel like trying against other human players, who would probably kick my butt in like 5 minutes Actually, I enjoy the strategy part. What I don't enjoy is the micromanagement, because I'm very bad at it. For example, now I'm trying to finally finish the Brood War campaigns of StarCraft. Suppose that I want a task force with N Science Vessels and 2N Battle Cruisers. Each Science Vessel will cast Defensive Matrix on 2 Battle Cruisers, and they will all go into battle. Then I want to have some Medics offering support behind the front line, so that if any Ghosts lock down my Cruisers, the Medics immediately restore them. Well, I can't issue a general directive and have it happen automatically. I have to click on each vessel, choose the cruisers to cast the defensive matrix on, then manually command the medics to follow them, and if I need to issue 'restoration' - that's also manual. And usually what happens is that units get mixed with other units, and I click on the wrong one, and send it the wrong place, etc. So instead of a coordinated planned attack, where every units receives its orders ahead of time, I need to constantly, well, micromanage them all. If there is a strategy game that solves this problem, and allows proper meta-commands and higher-level planning, I'd like to try that.

dr_st OMG yes the micromanagement! It's just too much! It's cool to watch people do it but its aggravating to execute.
