Ive never heard Adventures of Square described as an arena slaughter but in the playthroughs I watched I did see people often frustrated with how hard it is, (long confusing level designs, way too many enemies, not enough ammunition etc.) especially for a mod perceived to be for kids.

Plutonia MAP21: Slayer resembles an arena imo. What are your thoughts?

How come your only example is Adventures of Square? There's barely any arenas, the only map I recall is the secret wild western themed map and the boss battles at the end of each episode. Everything else was built around heavy exploration.

I think he talks about Sunder which has more square sectors than adventure of squares.

sorry i was joking because i didn't intend to create this thread as a sort of name and shame thing. i'm a new user and didn't want drama like that.
but at this point i don't care, considering the tosser reply from memfis, you make good maps but don't talk to me like that.
i didn't want to be naming anything specific. since you do want names and shames, anything by bridgeburner. i just named a goofy wad that i thought was the polar opposite of an arena slaughterwad and, since i'm a new user, that sarcasm went over your heads. no harm no foul.

I think it's a tough genre to make interesting, unless it's mixed with something else. For me, a borderline slaughter battle could work well as one portion of a larger map, if it made sense thematically. But I was never really into maps that dump you into two or three huge rooms with ammo lining the walls and then unleash a million revenants and hell knights.

I like the genre a lot but I have to be in the mood for it. Since I don't play doom all day every day like I did in my teens, it takes me a bit of time to warm up, and most slaughter maps are, well... really hard.
I dont think it needs to be that way. With extra soulspheres and other healing stashes, and fewer archviles and cyberdemons I think it can be a lot of fun for people who are new to the genre.

I agree bridgeburner maps are pretty unimaginative in the gameplay department. It seems like very few people can combine elaborate architecture with really fun fights, either because mappers tend to be good at only one thing or because it's just too difficult to change the geometry for the sake of gameplay after drawing 10,000 lines.

Well, I usually still read people's posts after blocking them. Perhaps he's the same. Worth a try at least.

I thought slaughtermaps are those generic maps which throw 500 revenants and 20 archvilles at you. Maps are not interesting to look at (no unique architecture, no memorable views, just big spaces designed around this kind of gameplay) and the gameplay makes me sometimes to rage quit. I don't get how adventure of square is considered that, no relation imho.
p.s. Ok, I got the adventure of square is supposed to be sarcasm.
