I'm a huge SOR fan. I was keeping an eye on this game but it looks pretty unremarkable. Other than the new coat of paint, it's pretty much the same as the games we already had. it stays true to the original gameplay mechanics, almost to a fault. Except for the Street Fighter Alpha series style hit counter which seems slow and out of place in a game like this. The total damage dealt it tells you at the end means nothing to me since all health is represented by bars. The music and sounds are ok but they aren't as punchy and cool as I would expect from a Streets of Rage game. Outside of bosses, it seems like theres like ~200 enemies per stage on mania skill, but only like 10 varieties, with maybe 3 of them not just nostalgia-bait reskins of enemies from earlier games. They didn't even go heavy on the recolors and names. (All 8 of these dudes are all named Donovan? Really?) I got kinda bored of watching by Stage 8. It sucks that Sega went all cease-and-desist on Streets of Rage Remake just so they could make this aggressively average game.
They did make blaze hot as all fuck though, so props for that.

I'm also not a fan of this game. Streets of Rage Remake was the game the fans were asking for, and it's really tough to understand how Sega is so out of touch with it's own fanbase. I'm not huge on the art style here either, that type of rendering worked really well for certain titles but doesn't work for a Streets of Rage game in my opinion. It needs to be grittier, less smooth and pretty. Also, that Cherry character is pure fucking cancer.

I've played over 20 hours on Steam and had a more positive outlook on how the game ended compared to what I was expected. I had few complains at first, from what seems to be increased difficulty and a very long main game (12 maps, 1:30 to 2:00 hours, and if you die and have to continue (which will take you in the beginning of the level) you might end up even 3 hours of playing, compared to the past titles where you would play one round for half an hour to relax). But it grew on me, it will save and come back later, while it seems difficult at first because there are some new annoying enemies where you have to learn the strategy. There are some new ideas for enemies here, and basically the added compo systems (enemies can bounce at the edge of the screen instead of falling out, so you can hit them on air and continue with some compos) and new mechanics will make it less difficult to play after a few times. It just grew on me and I thought they did justice to the title. The music might be different than what we are used, but I've noticed the cuts and syncs with the action at some places, it's pretty rad! I think the more I play it the more I like it. It's darn well done (The artstyle, yeah sometimes I also don't like HD 2D art styles compared to 2d low pixel mosaics, don't know why. But I kinda liked it here, combined with the shader effects, the attention to detail in the backgrounds). And the people behind it is not just Sega, it's the same devs (LizardCube) who made another game I thought was really well done, Wonder Boy the Dragon's Trap. Also, I personally liked this new Cherry character, she has some great combos too.

I played that Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap remake by LizardCube and really liked it! That LizardCube art style worked well for that game, but in my opinion not as well for Streets of Rage. Have either of you guys played Mother Russia Bleeds? I was kinda hoping that a new Streets of Rage would be closer to that game, although not quite as gory.
