Nope not Pandemic Studios (RIP) but what games have you played during this quarantine season? Not that I'm staying indoors much more than I already have been but I've certainly gamed more.
DOOM ETERNAL, Halo CE Anniversary, Sonic Mania, and even opening up some games to play for practically the first time like Warhammer 40k Dawn of War and some games on emulators.
Where are the quarantine sales? I'd like to buy and play Resident Evil 1 remake HD but not at the regular price! Real quarantine gamer hours.

Hmm - since I started avoiding going out (roughly the 4th of March, I think?), I've beaten a few games (some of which were already in progress) and since started to pivot to mapping more. Here's the list (they're on PC unless I've said otherwise): - Rage 2
- Doom (2016) - replayed for the first time in 3-4 years
- Doom Eternal
- Assassin's Creed II - Deluxe Edition
- The Legend of Zelda (NES Classic Mini) - not finished yet, but I'm well over halfway
I'm trying to avoid resuming or starting anything else so that I can finally push my megaWAD, Doom II: 25 Years on Earth, out the door. There's plenty of options and temptations, however!

I don't really care about this pandemic (since the kung flu pretty much does nothing to people who aren't already on death's door or part of a few specific ethnic groups, while also being on death's door, which accounts for me and 90% of the rest of the planet... the completely disproportionate response is the hysterical spasming of our braindead, effeminate 'aristo'cracy and will have worse effects than the disease itself) but I sure have been a useless piece of shit this month! I've been playing AI WAR 2 ( Steam Humble GOG) which is dope and a pretty unique RTS/4X hybrid, based on target prioritisation and precision strikes. It doesn't have as much stuff in it as the OG AI War but it cleans up a lot of the interface guff that makes the latter so hard to get into. That's not to say this has a learning curve so much as a learning cliff face it slams your face into a few times but it's still a major improvement. STARWARD ROGUE ( Steam Humble) I got this (at full price, possibly the only game I've ever bought at full price lol) to show some love for Arcen Games ie. the AI WAR 2 devs, who've been in wholly undeserved financial straits for a few years now. It's also really good! It's a Binding of Isaac/bullet hell shmup mashup, which makes it sound bad because BoI is boring as hell but this transcends it's chief influence in every way by being a lot of fun -- for example, there's about a dozen different starting loadouts that change the game in important ways (a boring normal loadout, a 'Superhot' mode, a one-hit-death loadout with extremely powerful weapons, a defensive loadout that focuses on redirecting enemy bullets, a tank, etc.) in addition to the usual roguelike RNG stuff. I wasn't expecting all that much so this was really a nice surprise too. STARDEW VALLEY ( Steam Humble GOG) Boring farm chores simulator that's the main reason I didn't finish the DBP22 map I started. I've clocked about 72 hours over the past couple of weeks, I wish I'd never reinstalled this it's not even all that fun what the fuck is wrong with me holy shit. (Penny is my waifu)

Resident Evil 2 remake on Xbox One. There is currently a sale on it for the next few days, so I got it for only $20 plus tax.
I just beat Leon's A game, now I will start Claire's B game. Then the ghost survivor missions. After that, Claire's A game, then Leon's B game.
I was a hardcore fan of the original three playstation games. I have to say, this remake is phenomenal.

(Penny is my waifu) I used to play Terraria for a while (I was never that good with the boss fights) and then after coming back from a big break I had no idea what I was doing and don't want to play anymore. At least I had some good architectural designing going on in the world I was building in. I've played Stardew Valley and did most everything that isn't socializing.. all work and no play (unless dungeoneering counts). Jumping back into the farm doesn't sound like such a bad idea since it has so many comfy pixels. Maybe if I start to try getting a Stardew Valley waifu it'd be a good step towards acclimating my mind towards having a waifu elsewhere! (Of course Rena from Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is my forever waifu...)

heh. I'm not someone you should ever take relationship advice from, but given the friendship model in SDV is essentially bribery (and not just that, but bribing them with the same thing over and over again once you figure out what they like best) rather than having things in common and spending quality time together I doubt it will provide much insight. Still, in game terms the NPCs will send you useful stuff in the mail so there's a good reason to do it anyway.
ACKSHUALLY the shitty relationship model is one of the worst things about this game, like, you can be in an implied sexual relationship with every eligible bachelorette in a tiny town of like 30 people, including a couple of sisters, and none of them notice or care at all????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's ridiculous. Also the paucity of special events sux too, I wanna be rewarded for dragging my carcass into town and giving some shitty thing I found on the ground to whatever rando I see first. At least change the dialogue a bit more often, geez. It's a bit less torturous now due to the addition of the 'secret notes' that provide useful information on what people like as opposed to having to just guess or look at the wiki, but a bit more nuance would be nice. I doubt it would be all that hard to modify the rate of friendship increase based on what other characters think about you, for example (like Abigail, aka the emo chick, constantly fights with her mum and dad so if they like you too much she'd be harder to impress; or, my waifu loves kids so she'd be more responsive if the NPC children like you, etc.). ok rant over.
I would be down for some SDV multi btw. Just sayin

Yesterday, I finally beat the 4th Survivor mission at like 10+ minutes, for the Resident Evil 2 remake. It was hard as fuck, but highly entertaining.
I've seen a lot of reviews for the Resident Evil 3 remake, being sub-par, which is disappointing. However, even the original RE3 was considered to be sub-par, by reviewers, back in the day.

I think my nostalgia goggles are broken or something. My wife and I put on a bunch of sega genesis and super nintendo roms on a pc that we connect to the living room TV. I thought now might be as good a time as any to get into the old video games I wish I had as a kid.
It blows my mind how many games were utter garbage. I guess having been a doom level designer for so long, its shocking to see the profession in its adolescence in such abysmal quality.
Some of these games are just so absurdly difficult or clunky that im surprised adults thought they were even releasable and people would willingly pay money for them.
One game in particular is Lion King for the sega genesis. We got to stage 2 before we both decided to start using save states and even then the later stages require such adept pattern recognition and snap judgments and reactions I could easily see a child getting so angry they threw the controller through the television screen.
I know I'm being a real boomer here. I can get behind the idea of overcoming obstacles so stacked against you that the learning experience is rewarding in itself, sure. But when the world of video game programming is at your fingertips, wouldn't making games that are fair and a generally fun experience without so many setbacks just make an obviously better game? Why was there so much crazy difficult bullshit?
My wife and I have been shuffling through dozens of games and the pure exhaustion of cashing out all 5 lives on the first couple levels of a game and having to fight the same bosses over and over just to see how the game ends is crazy and just a total chore.
I thought I had fond memories of this era of gaming as a kid but somehow theyve just run away from me in recent days. Old games fuckin suck. Its no wonder doom was such a bombshell the day it came out.

I will say that the music and pixel art for a lot of these games are fantastic. I can also put it past them that the technology they had to make these games were probably pitifully primitive for what they were using it for.
I'm just looking at these games as a game designer picturing how low the testers standards were putting these out as entertainment.
Then again ive been feeling this way with a lot of old media, like movies for example. A lot of movies from the 90's and later are just plain unwatchable if I hadnt already seen them before. Most are just too slow moving and have a lot of unimportant filler.

Btw im not trying to rag on you for liking old games. I understand it. I'm pretty transparent about my love for Doom to all sorts of people and I think its age has a lot to do with no matter how much I sell the game most people just dont see it the same way I do in the year 2020

I do think that a lot of old games were bad, but let's put that in perspective a little. Most modern games are really bad, not necessarily for exactly the same reasons, but they are. The difference is that now we have filtering mechanisms in place so that only the best games receive our attention. Not to mention that there are an exponentially larger number of games being made nowadays. Thus, it can appear as though we're in a time where games are just better. Most games suck, as do most bands and most movies(and most attempts at "art" in general), and you also need to remember that back in the day there was no internet and no social media, therefore there was less of a way for consumers to hold the developers accountable. Sure, you had game magazines that did reviews, but half of them were biased all to hell. Plus, we don't know what games you are referring to specifically. The mid-to-late eighties/early 90's game consoles had a fair number of top-tier games that are absolutely timeless, but you may not own them because they are really expensive now on eBay. A lot of movies from the 90's and later are just plain unwatchable if I hadnt already seen them before. Most are just too slow moving and have a lot of unimportant filler. This made me cringe. It's very much why I dislike and won't watch most modern movies. They simply have no sense of pacing, and strive to appeal to the millenial dipshits and their lack of attention span. Older movies(not necessarily 90's, I'm talking older) were slow burns. People understood that the payoff would be better if they waited and let the story build and marinate. Take the movie "Alien" from 1979. That movie would likely bomb if you put it out now. Not enough gore, too slow, no tits, no explosions, people aren't all mega-attractive, etc.

my gaymer laptop broke so I'm playing mostly emulators on my smartphone. I've been playing splatterhouse 2 and 3, castlevania bloodlines (genesis), dracula X (snes), splatterhouse and cadash (turbografx) and master of darkness (master system)

Just placed my order for a new gaming laptop, which should arrive by May 15th the latest. I got the Dell G7 17, here are the specs: 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (12MB Cache, up to 4.5 GHz, 6 cores) Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, English NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 8GB GDDR6 with Max-Q Design 16GB, 2x8GB, DDR4, 2666MHz 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (Boot) + 1TB 5400 rpm 2.5" SATA Hard Drive (Storage) I know I could have built a great tower, but I can't take it to work with me. Which should be fine for the next 11.5 years till retirement. I'm not that old, but I started working with my company at a young age, I'll be 47 by that time.

I've decided to play Anachronox. The name grabbed my attention because there is a texture rip of that game for Doom, unpaletted, and at least one of those texture was used in Bloody Rust, if I recall correctly (if not, it was some other doom mod, but they used what was easy to convert).
A great game that is indeed. A bit easy on Normal, though - I think it would only be a problem on Normal if one is rushing, or doesn't use explosive items early on to wrap early battles quickly (later, those are useless, as the damage is comparable to what your other weapons do when you are levelled, or even lower that that of your weapons). Shields were useless so far - complete waste of turn. I politely declined the chance to play on higher difficulty, though.
I love the atmosphere. You are a broke detective with a debt to clean, and you are in deep shit. You get beat up and thrown out of the window at the beginning of the game, right in front of everybody. And the game basically continues in the same venue. Just beat a boss and got ripped off again. The track is very melancholic. And of course, the detective is hardly a guy with a soul - he got his assistant resurrected post-mortem and put her into virtual simulation or something so that she can work for him after her death - now that he is broke, she actually can sometimes show him the way around and prevent from going to places until he completes certain objectives, or tell him where the fuck he should be going.
I like this kind a lot more than that pathetic Doom Slayer garbage. When I was young, I couldn't understand English enough to understand Doom lore - or in fact, never found out the original had one - but the original had too much of it. You were a fucking space marine there - what a piece of shit background that is. I instead imagined the Doom's protagonist to be a random nobody trying to escape from hell in afterlife - and he deserved to rot in hell by all rights - he just had a pistol in his hand and hoped to get out, and escape punishment, kinda like a serial killer or a paedophile escaping from jail. All of Doom 1 was happening in Hell, of course - there were no military bases, you are in hell in afterlife, you died and went there, pretty much deserved it. The Doom II is when hell merges with earth then, so by the end of it you are able to flee and return to normal life - back from the dead, and nobody would actually be happy for you to do that shit, fuck you, where is fucking justice, you are rotten piece of shit and the hell was the right place to contain you, but you got out. That's my view of what original Doom is. "The Suffering: Prison is Hell" game got it right, too, there you could decide the background of a protagonist by your own actions throughout whole game (whether you are involved in your family's death or not, and to what degree), - that's how it should work, none of these "badass space marine" or "demons fear you" bullshit. Also, the protagonist of "The Suffering" is silent for entire game (like original Doom's protagonist is) - just make sure to get the original and not the sequel, I heard the sequel was junk.

I'm not one for political correctness, but from playing online with people, it kind of makes me cringe to hear some of the cliché high school level profanity and insults being exchanged. Most likely from people that are actually still in high school. It doesn't offend me, but it does make me feel like I'm participating with low-IQ, crass, fat-bodies.
