I feel like it isn't entirely hell, but more as if hell is shaping up whatever it can to make doomguy scared.
Nirvana : Fear of the unknown, teleporters are taking you to random locations, that sometimes don't even resemble anything. Even the name is confusing.
The Catacombs : Fear of being buried alive and claustrophobia.
Barrels O' Fun : Fear of getting blown up.
The Chasm : Fear of heights.
Bloodfalls : Fear of blood.
The Abandoned Mines : Fear of being buried alive (again).
Monster Condo : Fear of the dark.
After Monster Condo it seems like hell stops messing around and shows its true form at The Spirit World and onwards, to scare doomguy even further.
Monster Condo succeeded in scaring me off with that room full of gore when I first played it when I was 11. Those hanging corpses looked like real life digitized bodies, because they look like nothing else in the game, unnatural artstyle contrast.

Good analysis! I agree I think doom 2 presents itself that way too. I think it transitions well to the rest of the doom universe as well. That you never actually get 'out' of hell. Rather our hero suffers an eternity of constantly fighting for his life in new scenarios with no hope of ever getting out.
Its a hard life being a doom marine

I'd say the Catacombs is rather a fear of death (hence the name) rather than being buried alive or perhaps the fear of being lost, 2 more prominent themes than being buried regarding the Catacombs.

Hmm, this is a very nice interpretation. I've often seen people complaining about episode 3 not being hellish enough, and I think this is the best rebuttal so far. You've also managed to show how varied it actually is. There is a level about teleporters, a level about cramped spaces, barrels, heights, damaging floors, darkness and so on. So for example Nirvana might seem boring or annoying, but it actually serves an important purpose in the episode. Cool stuff.

40oz @memfis Thanks guys. It's like that probably because there weren't enough hell textures to convey the theme more properly, doesn't help that for whatever reason most maps barely feature the nice hell sky or not at all and only put it in the exit. mrthejoshmon You're onto something, but I feel like that's the general theme of the game, all the phobias listed above can lead to death, so that's would be redundant IMO. You might've meant fear of the dead, as in being surrounded with dead people.
