When Willits left id software, i saw a lot of comments from fanboys on social media posts and news articles that read really disappointed. He's one of the last guys (aside from Donna and Kevin Cloud) from the original id software who was still on the team since it was accquired by bethesda and he gets remarkable credit for the quake series for reasons. I don't buy it. I think he has some useful internal knowledge about level design and game design which he puts forward in the interviews I've seen of him, but more often than not he's just an entrepreneur. He's a gamer as much as he has to be. His relationship with games is making a marketable product. If it's a novel game that lasts forever, it's an accident. I don't like him and the raven series isn't good even when I put my imagination glasses on.

So much this. I think he lucked into a job at id based on the back of a map his cousin actually made and must have taken some incriminating photos of Carmack or somebody to have lasted as long as he did. I dunno how true that all is but I'm sticking to it.

He's getting old. I'm sure he was as hardcore as any of us when he was younger. If I recall correctly, he had a huge role in STRIFE as well as the Quake games, particularly Quake 3. Maybe he got old but doesn't know how do to anything else anymore.
