The only reason I like berserk and chainsaw in Doom is because I understand the mechanics of the game so intimately that i know how to use them effectively. They are not naturally good weapons, and are often sources of unexpected high-risk, high-damage mistakes.
I find this to be true often in many games that incorporate melee weapons. The first person genre is not a good platform for melee combat, and generally they only fill the role of the only infinite ammo weapon. The rare exceptions have to make great concessions to make the melee weapons more appealing, often by making them very overpowered, giving them a beefier/crunchier sound, or by incorporating some sort of lunge mechanic so you can use it from a safer distance.
Melee weapons/attacks just arent good in shooters and likely will never successfully resemble how one might actually use a melee weapon without getting too quick-time-event-y.
I rolled my eyes so hard at the introduction of the doom eternal sword for being not only another melee weapon in a game that already has insta-kill chainsaws and glory kills and a berserk powerup. It also has no connection to the source game. What the fuck is the point?

Shadow Warrior 2 has the best FPS melee weapons I have ever used, go use them if you want a pleasant experience.

The first person genre is not a good platform for melee combat Well it's a first person SHOOTER. Melee weapons are sort of an afterthought. And all (or most) of the enemies use distance weapons which renders melee stuff pretty useless. A melee focused FPS would probably be cool but I've never heard of such a thing.

VR with hand-held sensors is the only way I could see melee weapons in a FPS being fun.
Blade and Sorcery looks like it is fun, because it has hyper realistic physics.
I plan on getting a VR ready laptop, with either an HTC vive or Occulus Rift.

That's true, removal of keyboard mouse controls in VR looks like the way to go.

I find this thread very disturbing, as it has anti-Hexen overtones.

I find this thread very disturbing, as it has anti-Hexen overtones. I always played as the mage I tended towards the Cleric, because if you can suffer through the first bit he ends up getting the nastiest final weapon in the game.
