In other words, which wads are considered the most basic, cookie-cutter and low-brow? And who is the Michael Bay of mapping?

Speedmaps with diagonal and symmetrical architecture (penalty points if enemy placement is also symmetrical).
As for your other question I guess Sergeant Mark IV even though he hasn't made a bunch of maps. If not him then I guess either Xaser, Ribbiks, or Dragonfly. I considered Jimmy too but I don't recall him making much with shiny glowing special effects. Penalty/bonus points for every mapset that changes the color palette, and even more so if the color changes include PURPLE.

Got to be limit-removing, cl-2 speed maps with little or no custom resources. About as generic as you can get.
As for the Micheal Bay. I think DW summed it up best with their Tormentor667 section in that lengthy article from December. He loves big production and explosions and effectively maps large-scale action films.

I think you dudes are being a lil unfair to pop songs, which might be all the same but definitely have high production values and need to be catchy and crowd pleasing. prolly the closest thing to that would be something like Scythe, with short, relatively simple maps that look nice and are fun to play without necessarily requiring heaps of thought (caveat: it's been years since I played Scythe and barely remember it so I'm kinda going on its reputation here). The doom community I think tends towards Dream Theatre style prog metal wankfests (overly long tracks that grossly overstay their welcome, excessive technicality that if removed, would benefit the song, tiresome warbling in the name of reaching ever higher notes) rather than pop. See every fucker releasing a megawad of 20-40 min maps filled with ever more intricate voodoo doll tricks etc.
Shit, now I've laid it out like that, maybe we're the popstars of the community...

Haha, I like the idea of comparing music genres with maps.
Pop - Jimmy, Bridgeburner, etc. Easily digestible architecture and gameplay that please the mainstream.
Metal - Ribbiks, Obsidian, etc. Complex layouts and gameplay that might not please everyone, but still has a sizeable amount of fans.
Rock - Erik Alm, Memfis, etc. Maps that follow what's been established, but with lots of variants.
Experimental - Linguica, TimeOfDeath, me, etc. Maps that take a lot of liberties, where the mappers always try something weird and new.
Funk/Disco - I don't have any specific people, but I feel like the Doomer Board Projects fit into this genre. Offbeat, but established mapsets.

pop - brutal doom, sometimes it can be fun, but mostly it's not rap - BTSX, clueless people love it, but it fucking sucks classical music - Suspended in Dusk, methodical and elegant, but mostly loved by elitist fucks punk - Zen Dynamics, fun, short and full of adrenaline brutal technical death metal - Sunder, extremely intricate creations that challenges you to like it

Maybe some of you are using the word pop with different connotations. As for pop mappers that are loved by everyone, even outside the forums, I would say Jimmy, Dragonfly and Skillsaw and I also think they have that cookie-cutter feel in many of their maps. Sarge for his love of over the top and exaggerated effetcs would be a good candidate for the Michael Bay of mapping. Erik Alm is slight different, I would say he's like Led Zeppelin since he's still very popular and always revered for his importance.

The transition of doom maps into its final form as the stage set for popular american game/realitytv show "The Voice" is getting kinda blah imo.

I dunno, whenever I see a Bridgeburner map the only thing besides a dank laundry basement that comes to mind is this: I mean it sure as fuck ain’t gameplay that’s memorable about them.
