I finally resumed my playthrough of Doom Zero and want to know what other WAD I can play with nice maps when I'm done. Preferably Crispy Doom compatible.
I enjoy the puzzle elements in this WAD. They're just right.

Thank you for the recommendations guys.
Finished Doom Zero (I consider it finished without playing the secret levels). The timed sequences in particular got a little old in the last couple of maps after having done the same kind over and over again (which at that point I considered it to be filler than something fresh so I idclipped to filter out the struggle when I know the solution if I failed to make it the first time) but yeah cool WAD with cool comfortable maps. One of my favorite of the puzzles was figuring out the correct sequence of switches to press to make lifts lower in the right order to escape a room which I thought was pretty creative and you get to do it twice in the same map I believe. The reason I like the puzzles in this WAD is that they're not too trying or obtuse with how to progress. They tend to clearly present an obstacle that brings out just the right modicum of noggin' joggin' to make the maps more interesting and fun to progress in.
I played the first level of Slayer right after and it's definitely a harder WAD. I'll try to continue that later.

Awesome dude, hope you enjoy it. MAP01 was one of the hardest in the set if I remember rightly.

Premature SlayeR.wad review: On MAP05 of SlayeR right now. If this wasn't made in the early 2000s I'd be taking the piss out more on those Doom level design essays and posts about always making sure the player is moving and all that sort of trouble for the player. So far it's a pretty tough mapset that definitely me of those challenging 2000s maps that skilled mappers made, and my first taste of MAP05 reminds me of Kama Sutra's latter round of maps. Some maps I find wanting there to be a bit more health, and in others some more ammo. Especially rocket ammo. There could be more space variety too since combat is always kind of tight and I take damage when I try to take cover a lot more than I feel I should. I'm not masochistic (or I guess gud) enough to enjoy it as much as the creator or the speed demos archive folk might but I still like being presented the challenge (not that I'd want these kinds of maps submitted for a DBP of mine though). Definitely would not want to pistol start every map (I always play continuously but even more so I desire here). It's not as nuanced as the original Plutonia was but yeah it's cool.

Finished SlayeR. Once I passed MAP05 is when things started to be less of a grind and more fun for me so this is where the really good stuff starts. MAP06 is the last map using the Plutonia textures and while it was still painful with symmetrically placed archviles on two sides of an arena that also had some infinite height blocking hanging bodies I liked it most of the Plutonia part. In my premature review I said MAP05 reminded me of Kama Sutra but that was only in my first impressions of the design and I meant to say MAP31 since I took a peek at that before shutting the game off. Oh and I just realized that I've been playing on Ultra-Violence this whole time too. Fewer chaingunners and such on lower difficulty settings I see. I gave MAP31 a go on HNTR mode and it was okay though neutered that way. Normally I'd ignore it but I liked this WAD enough to give the bonus map a go.
Anyway I'll choose MAP08 as my favorite of the bunch. I can appreciate parts of the previous maps too but MAP07-MAP10 is the stuff I really wanted to see that I had a good time with. Well made maps with level design that inspires me, with challenging gameplay too! Fun!
Good WAD. I just don't like "Plutonia-as-it-is-remembered" pain cages. So yeah I'll recommend those maps to you guys too, though your experience will differ from mine if you choose to start with a pea plinker of course.

Just finished Oracle by Jim Flynn and Scott Harper. Good set of 2 maps it was fun. I finished MAP01 in 35 minutes and MAP02 in 13 minutes (not entirely accurate but around that). I got lost when trying to figure out how to get to the yellow key's door in MAP01 and how to raise the stairs to get to the town above in MAP02. The teleporting on all sides at the start of MAP01 was the trial to dip my foot into the water and enter the puzzleverse.
I believe I found my way through MAP01 pretty well helped by my 90s map experience, intuitive secret hunting super senses, my brain, and also helped by the levels just being well designed. I really love those animated textures that show choppy gameplay to provide hints, something I first saw in that secret mansion map in Eternal Doom. When I got lost in MAP02 on how to progress past the first big fight I found out how by using the map to notice an additional sector that wasn't there before and not how it was probably intended by unf'ing the one wall with a different texture than all the others. There are fake walls in these maps but they're cool and I only had to resort to unf'ing every single wall in MAP02. I got what I came for and I'm satisfied.
I downloaded Enigma too but for some reason it doesn't want to leave the zip file.

I've been playing Crusades by Richard Wiles as well as a few of his single map releases after completing SlayeR and I have to say that wow he's a great mapper. Again, very inspiring and I may even take some personal notes on the level design in some of my favorite maps of his. I am compelled to doodle design layouts on paper. Really good stuff that I really like.

First level punching Pinkies. Check! Oldschool 1995 style. Check! Minimalistic interesting architecture. Check! I like these oldschool hidden gems. I've played a lot and still find new ones!

www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/s-u/thepathlinkThe Secret Path from 1996 another impressive mid 90s wad that isn't on top 100 doomworld lists this one is different from The Abyss which is about 50 monsters per level, this single level wad is a very vertical 200-300 monster wad. you might want to edit out the custom sounds in Slade though, they're childishly amateur. dock a point for the sounds, honestly.

www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/m-o/nemracPALACE OF NEMRAC by Paul Corfiatis of Death Tormention, 2002 a Doom Odyssey, Doomed Space Wars, and Whispers of Satan - fame. dunno if he is alive or posts or what. single level that says he finished a great deal of it in 1996 and then completed it ten years later. it has the absolute essence of doom and despite how much i love them and enjoy playing them, it isn't a hyperdetailed gzdoom-centric modern style map, but a low detail, wide hallway, spiral staircase loving classic tex map. i suppose you could call it vanilla, but i don't know if it 's limit removing or not. above all, it's not easy to get lost.
edit: oh nice that wad 40oz randomed is also a Paul Corfiatis level.

I haven't actually played Doom in a while (for my own entertainment -- not playing to test stuff) so I decided to finally give Akeldama a run. I'm 6 maps in and I love it so far! It smells like a spiritual successor to Requiem. It plays really nice and it feels like its something from early 2000s. Very nice work everyone involved

was just doing a run through of Viggles' lovely Breach youfailit.net/pub/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/a-c/breach.zip from 2015. it's truly some of the most fun to be had in Doom. just fantastic gameplay, beautiful map, perfectly balanced challenge for each difficulty, and always feels like DOOM. I think his map Brigandine from 2017 is the best Doom map ever made but there is a lot I haven't played (though Doom Zero ranks up there in my top 5, that wad is amazing) are there any other maps you guys like to play once every few months?
