I think I'm a pretty good mapper, above average but nowhere near the titans of the community. Check out my stuff and tell me what you think, maybe I'm deluded.
Either way, I have always tried to make intricate, interconnected and good-looking areas but sadly, I have always been a very VERY slow mapper. For me mapping is a hard, brutal affair, it's not fun like it is for people like Jimmy or other titans. It usually starts with a box and I can stare at the box for hours, days and even weeks if you can believe it. Eventually, I make something and eventually it gets good. After a while, I find ways to make the map design more elegant. I also really struggle with making non-square areas and it is something I am really tying to fix about myself. My first WAD was called RetributioN Trilogy, a 3 map project that consisted of two huge 1 hour plus maps and a short boss map. I think it came out great, especially for a first time WAD but it took way too long to make, so long that I am embarrased to say how long. It's important for me because I want to get into the game industry and make my own classic shooter, which has been my dream for about a decade. I think I definitely CAN make good maps in a much shorter time because my JOM 4 map was quite big and I made it in only 10 days. But I have not been able to replicate this since.
When I was playing Ion Fury I kept wondering how these people came up with these crazy environments and crazy loops. If I work really really hard and for a really long time I can make something like that too, maybe, but I would really like to be more efficient.

Damn, it sucks that no one here has admin privleges, but this kind of thread is the type of thing you usually find in the mapping workshop section.
I don't really know how to describe my mapping process.. It's such a second nature thing for me, it's like trying to describe how my brain sends the signal to my legs when I'm riding a bike or something.
I was making hilarious "maps" in mspaint as a child, using the straight line tool and GIFs of the doomguy/doom enemies I found on the web... trying to recreate what maps look like in Doom when you hit tab. I found my first good map editor in 2001 (wadauthor) and just started slapping down linedefs one day and never stopped. Weaning from WA onto Doom Builder in 2004 was really hard for me but I did it, and I loved that you could just draw lines, like I had always wanted to do. But, a side effect of a brand new editor and UI was that I was making really tiny/cramped maps for a while. I struggled again in late 2016/early 2017 with FINALLY moving on to GZ Doom Builder, it got to the point that people were giving me the internet equivalent of 'funny looks' when I told them I used DB1 (not that it matters, but I noticed it!!). Trying to go back to DB1 and WadAuthor now is hilariously hard.
Since I don't know how to describe my process I just decided to blab about my mapping history, lol.

it sucks that no one here has admin privleges dnUh, I haven't mapped in months and idk if I ever will again but I'll try remembering something about my thought flow. I never really have an idea what I'm doing exactly, really I just slap rooms in. Making size-constrained maps (4096x4096 or 2048x2048) helps you to make more interconnected areas. Mostly my maps are about neat individual tricks, like a 3D bridge, or a room changing entirely, or a sector Thanksgiving Day turkey. I like doing that, even though people don't seem to appreciate that. My map for REKKR is a good example of that, I made a building pop up from the ground in vanilla and I spent 3 days making it work, yet no one was really impressed by that. I never really cared too much about combat, I was never a really good player and now I'm at a point where I struggle with Doom 2 on HNTR. So I just put in a few monsters just so that people don't call the map a walking simulator. All this writing makes me want to make a map again aaaaahhhhhh

This might sound very dumb but I feel like this has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself as a person. When you lack confidence it's common to be overly critical of everything you do, and that can prevent you from getting any work done. What's the use if it will suck anyway? Better stare at that box for another two weeks. But when you are comfortable with yourself, nothing stops you from creating all sorts of areas and seeing which of them work and which need to be scrapped. So maybe the way to map in a fast and fun manner is through learning to love yourself (something I never managed to accomplish).

It's like any hobby. Get Gud, and then rage because everyone else is Gud. Spend years being Gud. Eventually, you will evolve from Gud to God.
Perspiration and inspiration basically.

Hi, Zedonk here.
I came here to say that doomro is not alone and I also have this problem. I try to come up with ideas with what to put in my room but my mind always goes blank visual wise. Then, when I eventually do come up with a good idea and try to texture it, it always looks wrong for some reason so I often spend days wandering my maps in visual mode procrastinating because it is such a frustrating task for me. All I want to do is make fun engaging monster encounters but I get stuck with the artsy side of things because I have no artistic appreciation. If someone says to me, "that's a nice view," my mouth will say yes but my mind will think "that is a view just like any other view, why is it special again?" It's probably why texturing feels so hard for me. :s
Anyways, have a nice day reader!
P.S. I normally for hexen but I do sometimes participate in doom community projects so I can get some practice.
