Which wads would you need to play to gradually become the best with each wad? From a newcomer to a doomgod
Here are the steps in my opinion :
You'd need to beat those wads on ultra-violence without saves, cheats or continuous play for the steps to actually count, you can and are encouraged to use lower difficulties to study the maps before going in on UV.
0. Newcomer - Very basic and easy - Chex Quest
With this the newcomer just basically learns to aim, shoot and navigate, absolutely no pressure, the player can go at his own pace.
1. Newb - Simple and slightly challenging - Doom 2
Here the player already knows the basics from Chex Quest and will learn strategics, tricks and traps, and get accustomed to the extended roaster and the SSG.
2. Knowledgeable - Somewhat complex and nicely challenging - Plutonia
With all the things learnt from Doom 2, things will be harsher and more complex to navigate.
3. Experienced - Complex and challenging - Plutonia 2
4. Skillful - Simple and very challenging - Kama Sutra
So to know the challenges you need simple layouts and encounters, I find this one to be the best in that approach as big enemy crowds are generously restricted in movement by the generous mappers so player would have more time to react and understand how to approach such situations without getting overwhelmed, though sometimes it won't be afraid to shove you in, so you'll have to react quickly sometimes.
5. Regular - Complex and very challenging - Speed Of Doom
This time the layouts enforce you to think with pressure constantly, so you'll have to put what you've learnt from Kama Sutra to the actual test.
6. Seasoned - Very complex and super challenging - Sunlust
Even more pressure and more thought need to be put in each encounter, putting you to your limit, this is the steepest step in upping your skill level and there's no way around it that I'm aware of.
7. Legendary - Downright insane - Anything made by TimeOfDeath
Beyond any limit.
8. Doomgod - Anything goes
You've done it, now try beating all these wads on Nightmare...
