In terms of their appearances in video games, I'm sure I saw exploding (or at least breakable) barrels in old beat 'em up games like Streets of Rage and whatnot before Doom came along.

I think the key word here is cliche... as in it doesn’t matter which game had the first exploding barrel, Doom cliched it. Fala ingles porra!
