Under vanilla conditions you're left with the option to play with vertical mouse movement on unless launching the game with Novert. The advantage of vertical movement is to smoothly push/pull the player, making precise movement easier. It's also an useful tool for baiting demons and revenants in tight situations and other monsters in melee combat. The downside is awkward turning, particularly with higher sensitivity and autorun. Walking on thin ledges can be a pain as you can accidentally move to wrong directions and fall. That's where keyboard controls come in handy. Disabled mouse movement gives more precise turning which helps in gun combat and circle-strafing. I prefer very slow vertical mouse movement but end up playing with the default speed on DOS anyways.

+1 for no. Vertical movement with mouse is just strange. I don’t really use vanilla anymore, but if I did I would have to use novert.

I didn't mind it in my time playing with Chocolate and Crispy Doom. Not preferred though.

It's fun to turn on sometimes, but as someone who uses freelook 50% of the time, I'm so used to the novert feel.

The only use for this function I can think of is if you want to play the game with one hand.

And just what would you be needing your other hand free for @memfis?

It sucks and I wish it was disabled in Vanilla by default, it just fucks with your crucial movement when speedrunning or/and doing precise movements.

I never knew of this kind of mouse movement when I was playing purely with keyboard. Then I moved much later since Quake to the keyboard/mouse controls we all are familiar with. Then I looked back and found there was this kind of mouse movement (I think I even remember an old clip at ID offices of Romero playing that way and I was like what?) and I thought, did that thing even existed? Wtf?
Nope.
