I've started to replay blood recently and as with many mediums with seasons, episodes, albums, etc, I like to rank my favorites... And read about other people's favorites. So to all you blood fans out there, how would you list your favorite to least favorite (or I guess best to worst in your opinion) of Blood's episodes? Cryptic Passage, and Plasma Pak both count in the list (and if you're going to label them by episode numbers e5 is Cryptic passage while is e6 Plasma Pak). disclaimer: I'm sure someone has made this type of post before, but it's probably old so hopefully it's worth asking again. If not, my deepest apologies.
1. E5 Cryptic Passage: I love this episode. It manages to be more gothic than the base game (somehow) which gives it a creepier feel that goes with its fabulous level design.
2. E2 Even Death May Die: I enjoyed this episode from start to finish. The level design is kinda similar to Cryptic Passage but with an icy theme to it; large eerie levels with old rustic buildings. It's more consistent in design compared to the other episodes with every level involving a hedge maze or large glaciers. There was also multiple opportunities
3. E1 The Way of All Flesh: A great introduction episode. The level design was quite diverse, and playing through the shareware when I was more then enough to make me want to get the full game when I was a kid. There wasn't a single non-memorable level in my opinion.
4. E3 Farewell to Arms: This is a pretty good episode. The first half of the maps are the most memorable, the last half not so much. Though the episode in general is a bit dull. Also, what's with that choice of sky?
5. E4 Dead Reckoning: I find this episode to be like the last, but with the bland maps being a bit more blander and the memorable maps being more memorable. The crystal lake and mall of the dead levels being the highlights. It's fun, but I don't find it entirely interesting
6. E6 Plasma Pak: I find the levels to be mostly forgettable. The theme of the first half of the episode is like a continuation of E3 and I don't care for it to much. The second being more interesting and enjoyable for me, but I normally ignore the episode if I just want to pick one out to casually finish. It does bring a bit more to the table and it's still a blast though.

Great topic! We need more discussion of the game Blood, because it is becoming a forgotten gem. I can't rate them yet though because it has been a few years since I last played through Blood and the two add-on episodes, so I don't remember as much as I'd like to. It's interesting that you rank Cryptic Passage as your favorite, as it is the only episode not made by Monolith.

Funny, just when I get into a new game various threads about it appear . Nice. E6 Plasma Pak is going to be my favorite. Perhaps not an architecturally beautiful or memorable like E2 and E1, but I found it to easily be the most fun of all episodes. The new enemies made the combat even more crazy than it already was, although they're not technically new, some of the new Cultists were cut from the original game afaik, and the Chosen-in-training obviously resulted from the cut Beast mode. E2: This one has the most beautiful levels and some nasty traps but wasn't as much action packed, the exploration is what appears to be more emphasized. That Shining easter egg was awesome though. E1: Good introductory episode with varied and iconic levels, just as memorable as E2, if not even more so. E3: This one had some fun city levels, but beside them there's not much I remember from my playthrough. E4: Another memorable episode and probably the toughest of all considering that by this point all former bosses are rather frequent enemies, there's also just enough hellish levels which look amazing. Tchernobog however was a rather easy boss for someone fought at the end of the base game, the gray gargoyles posed a much bigger threat than all the others for instance since they force you to move quick and all the time. At this time I'm yet to play Cryptic Passage, damn whoever configured DosBox for Blood so poorly, took a while to finally fix the mess it so I'll play the expansion when I get to it.

Daaaamn, I still haven't played through the game. I've only finished the first 2 episodes. Well, I can say that I liked E2 more than E1, for it's snowy theme and for being really scary at times.

It's interesting that you rank Cryptic Passage as your favorite, as it is the only episode not made by Monolith. I think it's because they were more focused on the design aspect since they didn't add anything new (since they weren't Monolith) which worked out well in my opinion. At this time I'm yet to play Cryptic Passage, damn whoever configured DosBox for Blood so poorly, took a while to finally fix the mess it so I'll play the expansion when I get to it. When I used to play on Dos, I would simply drag and drop either Blood.exe or Cryptic.exe on dosbox, but that's probably what you do. My setup that I use is One Unit Whole Blood on steam (you can get it on GOG.com as well) and playing with the Blood GDX port. It's probably the best way to play the game for a modern experience.

Used to do that, but figured out how to run it differently, that way the game was also completely ignoring the dosboxBlood.conf which resulted in a less than optimal experience since it was ignoring all the tweaks I put inside. Also, no cutscenes would play when I was dragging the .exes over dosbox. At least that way I figured out what's the correct overlay option, looks like only one works for me. Now I only wonder why do the credits display incorrectly (as if it's splitscreen). BloodGDX looks good, but, Java, and that thing is notoriously insecure, so it's a big "No" from me unfortunately.

Blood is one of those great games I keep hearing good things about but I've never been able to play.
Btw moved this thread from TFC to Console & PC Games.

I have a feeling you'll have a better time with it than with all the other Build engine games. I know I did, never thought I'll enjoy this even more than the original SW. And Caleb's one-liners put everyone else to shame.

I just got Blood GDX working after suffering never ending errors with DOSBox, a much better and smoother experience to say the least (and now level 5 actually loads!).
Enjoying my time with it, though I have to say that carnival level CD music is absolutely horrendous and painful to listen to, yuck why is it so poorly balanced?

So I just finished all six episodes and I think my ranking still stands. E6 Plasma Pak was fun as hell especially the boss fight, but I thought the levels were still a bit uninspired. If any of you still haven't played this game yet... Why?
Next thing I plan to do is play and rate the level packs Deathwish. Personally I find it to be the (pre-sequel) we should have got. Since it takes place between Blood 1 and 2 and manages to connect the plot somewhat (as well as make its own). I finished the first two episodes of Deathwish before and it's top-fucking-notch. More filler blood posts on the way!

I think Blood's MIDI music is superior to the CD music. It's much more variable (there are only 8 tracks on in the CD soundtrack, and I think one of them isn't even used anywhere) and I think it captures the atmosphere better. The CD music does have a couple of songs better than in MIDI, but it doesn't fit into the game all that well in my opinion.

Episode 1 - really, it's as great and unforgettable as Knee Deep In The Dead Episode 2 - very atmospheric, with some of the best levels ever designed to a FPS Episode 3 - contains a pair of forgettable levels, but still great Episode 4 - here I think the level designers started to rush things, but there's still a few awesome levels
