John Romero once spoke of an unofficial Doom multiplayer game mode called Deathtag. It sounds like a game mode he's only played with close friends. I don't know if anyone besides him has played it, but he's mentioned it enough times to suggest that it's really fun.
The idea is to play a standard doom map with cooperative mode on, but instead of cooperating, you compete to get to the exit first. With the puzzles and backtracking associated with many of the standard IWAD maps, players try to kill each other to send them back to the start so you can get ahead. This may be the intended way to play cooperative, as the multiplayer things added to the IWAD maps seem more appropriate for this particular game mode than actually playing cooperatively.
I've never played Doom this way, but it sounds like a fun time. Has anyone thought about playing Deathtag?

I thought the idea of Deathtag was like actual tag, and the person who was ‘it’ at the expiry of time limit was the loser? Also coop was always intended as it was, it’s just that people found it more fun killing each other than getting along. You know, like real life

That might be from another game. The way I heard it described by John Romero was like a competitive coop mode.
