The reason I ask is because now that Minecraft's popularity has massively decreased compared to what it was at it's height there don't appear to be any popular Minecraft like games. There were plenty of clones and knockoffs for a while but not so much anymore, or at least none of them have been very popular.
Do you think Minecraft was a fad or will there be more popular Minecraft like games in the future?

I haven’t played it myself but from what I understand it’s a fad in the same way original Doom was a fad, meaning that the hardcores will always be around it regardless. From what mates tell me it’s a simple and fun game for their kids to get started on with the endless amount of fun stuff that can be built.

I never got into it either. I wonder if it started to suck once Microsoft bought it?

Doom was not a fad because it started a new genre (fps) where as minecraft hasn't. There were some clones for a little while but since then nothing has really happened.

Sorry oh great one, I should’ve know better than to question my Viking liege If you want to be pedantic I will tell you that Catacomb 3D, Wolfenstein 3D and even Blake Stone were fps games that came out before Doom. Maze War from 1973 is currently accepted as the world’s first fps, so suck it bro. Also Minecraft made billions and billions of dollars, if that doesn’t qualify as a fad I’m not sure what does, and neither do you.

I wonder if it started to suck once Microsoft bought it? Last time I've played it less than a year ago it was still the same game. They keep adding new features, but it's nothing bad, I guess. They did change how multiplayer works sometime after being bought by MS, don't know for better or for worse, since I don't play MP. Oh, the game was made more expensive, from what I know. I haven’t played it myself but from what I understand it’s a fad in the same way original Doom was a fad Doom was not a fad because it started a new genre (fps) where as minecraft hasn't. Minecraft is a sandbox game and there were sandbox games before MC, so it didn't start the genre. And there were plenty of sandbox games released after MC, some of which were reasonably popular, like for example, Rust, or (oh my god) Roblox.

Let’s not get hung up on semantics about game genre. It is a fad game, that simple, like how Tetris was a fad but definitely not the first puzzle game.
Also it would be wise for me to not be so anti-semantic at the same time, it’s boring to hate on dews. He is an easy target after all ;-)

Well people still play it, be it hardcore guys or casuals, people still post vids on youtube, be genuine content or clickbait material. People still make mods and maps for it, be memes or actual stuff. If that defines a fad or not, dunno, but it is still a active thing and not entirely populated by 12 yr old foreign kids as other overly edgy hardcore "reeel g@mers" believe.
It's just not that new anymore, now everyone knows it exists (aka many had bought it, you don't need to buy Minecraft over and over), and people have pocketful of experiences along with good memories of it. Sure, some people stopped playing it, but yall will see that isn't a exclusive case to Minecraft really.
Personally I am one of those cranky old veterans who purposefully pirated a older version because Microsoft brought in tutorials, and because of mod support. It takes time for modders to update their mods for the newest version.
Darn, I over-talked.

Minecraft community is still very active, and, unfortunately, Minecraft youtubers, too...
The cringe.

People still play it, yet, Minecraft at the time was really just a trend that didn't last long, something that was popular once and then succumbed into darkness, just like Pokemon GO that followed has, and now PUBG and Fortnite, all of them will be in ruins after the next "big thing" comes out.
