You know, Japan could well do this. They're giving Belgium a very dangerous game, with both teams getting chances and scrambling for defence. The only problem is that there isn't much really to test the keepers, as the defence has cut a lot of the motion out. Courtois very nearly had the worst spill of the tournament, but recovered it.
Japan getting two goals early in the second half has come out of nowhere! They're winning the midfield battle and making it count. You really can't count a team out in this tournament, it seems!

Green power from Fellaini the tree and the one accidental beautiful header from Vertonghen brings Belgium to 2-2!

... And then a 94th minute win from Belgium. You can't even count out a side that's two goals down in this tournament! Belgium 3; Japan 2 and Belgium to go on to tackle Brazil later this week. The results were as expected, but the games were a lot closer than one would've guessed and all the better for it!

Belgium 3 vs 2 Japan: Japan had such a great match! Brave decision to go all offense agaisnt Belgium at the 2nd half, 2 goal lead well deserved. But it was also their undoing to keep their very aggressive playstyle, and once fatigue kicks in and Belgium switches to more header heavy attacks, they were exhausted. Red devils looks like a champion in the making!

Hahaha you’re a sad pathetic cunt aren’t ya @contracommando ... So we got the climactic finish, but it was the pillow and not Mrs Palmer? Belgium almost conspired to lose... what an interesting result and tough luck to Japan, the last of our representatives in our Asian region. I see what you mean about the headers Aisleen. Absolute class for Japan's second goal, but ironically they lose for playing outside of the usual Japanese style. They really should've parked the proverbial after going up 2-0. Also, i'm going to Russia to watch the semifinals at St. Petersburg this July! Super stoked! Congrats, totally going to the World Cup! You’ll hopefully be getting a Brazil match heh. Do me a favour and wear a black shirt with a giant C-U-N-T on the front in white letters so that I can make you out on the TV hahaha. Good on ya dude, I hope you have a fun time! One of my colleagues is there now in St Petersburg, but he’s just about due home now and won’t be there that long into the tournament.

Now we are down to the last two Round of 16 matches: Sweden v Switzerland and Colombia v England. I know anything and everything has happened at this most fascinating of all World Cups, but I feel that the Swedes and the Swiss are battling to be quarter final losers. Colombia and England is the most intriguing match of the whole of the Round of 16 and I would say the smart money is on the winner here becoming the representative of their half of the bracket in the Final.

Backing England and a team that starts with "Sw" to get to the quarter final today! The former because I want it, the latter because I have no clue which team is better.

Oh yeah I love those Sw’s! Sweden look tight as, yo, but I’ll be skipping it in favour of sleep and get up for the poms to hopefully crush Colombian gold.

Woke up in time for the second half and it’s a penalty for England. Citizen Kane shoots and scores, 1-0! Now watch the character of Colombia come to fore under pressure as they start to hack, dive and overreact. Also nice Neymar style Oscar nomination by Henderson in the first.
Nice win for Sweden I’m guessing, how was the game for those who watched?

I missed the Sweden vs Switzerland game, but I know the goal came late. Whether that was a high intensity deadlock or another case of parked buses or inability to hit a barn door from inside the barn, I don't know.
This England came is horribly ill tempered thanks to the Colombians. I don't know what they'd be like if they just played the game, but because they've wasted all their energy on fouling us, it's very much our game to lose, I think. We're doing reasonably well, but still lack that cutting edge. We could go far, but a good team will have to find us out at some point...

That’s the beauty of this World Cup, everyone is vulnerable. Except Uruguay, those cunts are tighter than a nun’s you know what and get along like good brothers. They’re gonna be tough to defeat for any team.

Fuck me, after a near wondergoal by Uribe, Colombia have equalised from the corner 3 minutes into stoppage time! We’re going to extra time!

^ Heh. A fantastic conclusion to a wonderful Round of 16, shame there are only 8 more matches but they are at a more kinder time for me at least. Chart!: No more games for 3 days so I can catch up on sleep and become a nice cunt for a while. Next stage is the quarter finals and the first two will come Friday for non-Aussies and will be Uruguay v France first up. Second game later that day is Belgium v Mothafucken Cunten Brazil.

Street credentials of the 8 quarter finalists:
Uruguay: 2 time World Cup Champions, defeated Brazil in the 1950 "final" in front of 199,000 fans at Maracana stadium and historically as well as currently show balls of steel.
France: 1998 World Cup Champion on home soil, 2006 final loser on penalties. Historically have been a bunch of egos unable to get along without Zidane in the locker room to keep said egos in check. Softer than a Frenchman's belly after too much wine, cheese and frog legs. Escargot my car go said the great Big.
Brazil: 5 time, 5 time, 5 time, 5 time, 5 time Champions of the Worrrrrrrrrrrrld in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002 and losing finalists in 1950 and 1998. Unable to win at home, but we're in Russia now so all good in the hood. Looking good at this stage, memories of Belo Horizonte looking more distant by the match.
Belgium: Historically has achieved nothing internationally. Previous best finish was the 1986 semi final and losing that Cup's 3rd place play off 2-4 after extra time to France. This is their best ever team however and having nothing to lose psychologically will be dangerous for the Brazilians. Can go all the way if they can overcome the Seleção.
Sweden: Have been a formidable team from time to time. Previous best result was losing their home World Cup final 2-5 to Brazil in 17 year old Pele's debut on the world stage. Don't underestimate them, I'm looking at you England!
England: 1966 World Cup Champions on their own soil in one of the most legendary finals of all time. Have vastly underachieved compared to their potential for the 52 years since then, not even gaining a Euro title. Finally though the English look like an actual team, although not devoid of flaws, and are no longer reliant on superstar players such as Gazza, Beckham and Rooney.
Russia: Best previous result was the 1966 Semi Finals as the Soviet Union, and then proceeding to lose the 3rd place playoff 1-2 to Eusebio's Portugal. On home soil a lot of miraculous things can happen for the home side, unless you're Brazil. Once again it's wise not to underestimate the lowest ranked team that entered this World Cup.
Croatia: Full of potential from time to time, now they have the players to really do great things. Only once previously have they made it out of the World Cup group stage, and that was 1998 where they lost to eventual Champions France in the Semi Final and then won the 3rd place playoff 2-1 against the Dutch. Don't bet against them.

Wonderful article from the incomparable Tim Vickery after yesterday's Brazil v Mexico game on the Neymar overacting issue. Tim's knowledge of Brazilian football and in particular Neymar carries enormous weight as he has followed his progression from youth teams to the present time, and it was he in fact through his journalism which alerted me to this future star back in 2010 while he was playing for Santos. If you think Neymar's penchant for being bratty is bad now, he actually got his coach fired back then when the coach displeased him from substituting him early from memory. A mercurial character to be sure.
