Hi, I am looking for a truly old-school Doom experience(minus the CRT monitor, which I don't have). I was wondering if PrBoom+ could provide this experience, assuming that it was configured correctly. Before anyone yells at me, I did look into both Chocolate Doom and Crispy Doom, both of which have Linux versions, but the installation/compiling instructions were so poorly written that I am unable to get them up and running at the moment(but if you can help here, please do). PrBoom+ is easy to install on Linux, so I am wondering if it is possible to make PrBoom behave and look exactly like the original DOOM.EXE from 1993 did. Can anyone help me?
Goals:
1. Make the graphics appear just as they would have in 1993(colors, resolution, gamma, contrast, fake shadows, etc.) 2. Make the sound come out like it would have back in 1993 through my old Sound Blaster 16 card. 3. Make the game run as it would have back in 1993(game speed, monster behavior and AI, object behavior, physics, etc.)
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

640x400 resolution and -complevel 2 is pretty much it, isn't it?

I think there may be more to it than that, but then again I don't know. There are so many compatibility settings and visual settings in the menu that I always get end up getting overwhelmed. Plus I'm having trouble getting Fluidsynth to work because I don't know where to place the .dll file.

I played Doom on the original exe pretty much everyday in 1995. I can tell you PrBoom+ on 640x400 is exactly how I remember Doom looking back then. You see this kind of grainy shit here? That’s how it looked like on LOW detail. I don’t care about PC specs/programming vagaries or whatever, but I remember what I saw. I would never have played Doom for so long if it looked like that crap that comes out of Chocolate Doom. @vordakk complevel 2 pretty much covers all of your shit bro gameplay wise. Can’t help you about the sound part of it though.

Perhaps you didn't actually play the original version though, I think. If PrBoom+ looks the same on 640x400 like you remember it could be that you played Doom through that Doom95 port which supports higher resolutions than the original 320x200. As about the question of the topic, other than that comp setting and the resolution I'm not sure there's anything else to do. Maybe cap the framerate at 35FPS.

Yep I think you’re right on that. I had this discussion when I was at doomkid’s place the other night and while I never had a pc that ran Win95 (mine was Windows 3.11), he booted up Win95 Doom at 640x400 in front of me and I can swear that was what it looked like. This is pretty odd for me, because Doom in 1994/95 at 320x200 shits over the pixely output I get from Chocolate Doom. Even dosbox looks better.

I set GZDoom on 320x200 once to see how it looks like and damn, it was so, so fucking sharp, these CRT monitors and tech I had on my Win95 and 98 machines surely did some magic.

Wow, you guys met? Any pictures? Yeah, he’s been over to mine and now I’ve been to his. It’s one-all so far. No pics, but we talked about you bro haha (actually mostly myself did the talking)... all bad too I must say, you have been disappointing me lately my illegitimate Russian son. Too much talky talky and not enough mappy mappy from my favourite memfy baby
