I think most people probably think of blasting through all the zombiemen and imps in Knee Deep in the Dead. Some people think of getting lost while exploring the mazey corridors of the dungeon crawl maps of E2 and E3. Others think of finding secrets, solving puzzles, tiptoeing on catwalks and other 'gamey' elements.
I think my head is too desensitized by all the doom wads I've played to really define "classic doom" gameplay in my mind, but there are plenty people who have fond memories of playing Doom and describe gameplay in a wad they play as "classic" when it rubs that sweet spot for them. What does it really mean to you when you read the phrase "classic doom" gameplay?

To me classic Doom gameplay is about exploring strange environments while shooting monsters that come from every possible direction. It's usually no more sophisticated than this and that's why it's good - you can easily start or drop playing this game.

Classic Doom's gameplay means for me :
- Easy maps even on UV because original doom maps usually don't have a really high number of monsters and also no very unfair traps.
- A lot more ammo/health than needed because original Doom maps were supposed to be played by everyone and Doom is known to have a fast-paced gameplay.
- A lot of secrets (between 5 and 10 in each map I think) because exploration is fundamental. Also add , the non-linearity because the player must feel at least a bit lost.
- No platforming or a little but nothing too annoying.
- Simple aesthetic , no doom map contain a shitload of useless details. However it's important to make rooms with various shapes because doom maps are not supposed to look totally realistic.

If it runs on vanilla doom properly, that means no drawseg, visplane, or sprite overflows.

You control the pace of the action with non-linear progression that piques curiosity. Dungeon-crawling your way to shoot monsters, explore, and find secrets along the way.

Non linear progression, exploration, secrets, platforming, puzzles, fast paced combat, numerous enemies coming after you.
I think I got the most important parts. I think.

I think that everyone before me nailed it pretty well. That’s it bro, don’t go in for the sloppy seconds. I knew Scandinavians are pretty open minded in regards to sexual activity, but between this and the post to Trace you’re worrying me dude.

Well we got to keep up the stereotypes. The Swedish Sin and all that. In fact, I’ll make sure to inject that agenda into every WAD I release! Doom isn’t about shotguns and demons – no – it is about the freedom of extramarital intercourse! The IOS isn’t screaming in pain as your rockets punch through its throbbing orifice – its having a good time! And the Mastermind didn’t set up shop under a crusher by chance – it harboured an aching desire to be squished by a puny green man. Consider these acts of love during your next play-through.

Classic Doom game play, to me, involves maps that you can get lost in, albeit not for too long (as they're not huge), resistance that ebbs and flows (whilst rarely becoming overwhelming) and no real clear sign-posting that an objective is anywhere until you've already sought it out. Key enemies are zombiemen, shotgunners and imps. It's fun because of what you're exploring as much as what you're fighting. The modern, set-piece driven approach is far more influenced by modern games and providing a controlled experience that works well once, whilst the classic style is replayable because there's alternative routes and plenty of breathing room to allow you to go faster and more recklessly.
