If deathmatch is your thing, our buddies in the World Doom League have set up a Free-For-All Elimination tournament. The WDL guys have organized their new "Special Event" category of doom multiplayer competition. It's a series of deathmatches that take place in specified maps. It starts with a qualifying round where you will be pitted with 5 other players. The top two players who score the most frags will be selected for the 8 player FFA Megacup. Everyone is welcome to join, but you'll need to sign up, which you can do by registering to doomleague.org forum and making a post in the signup thread (linked in the source below). Umm nevermind, it seems the WDL is dead Some internal fighting broke out between the commissioners and players, and it looks like Ralphis pulled the plug on the site. Not sure exactly what the details are yet. Still investigating.

I read some chat logs on the WDL discord -- a lot of people talking about how the WDL is dead now, a bunch of people either vanished or have been banished from the channel.
I just talked a little bit to Alt-Stab, one of the commissioners of the WDL. He says the WDL has been a really time consuming and expensive hobby project. It's a lot of work and many of the people participating in it are a lot of complainers and shitposters and whatever. Ralphis' patience has been wearing thin for a while now and this is one of many times where they seriously talked about pulling the plug on the whole thing, but last night was the straw that broke the camels back.
The most recent events involved commissioner and team captain HumanBones slacking on carrying some of the weight. He also got busted for ghosting* which became a new rule for future WDL's. There's been some controversy about whether that should be considered cheating or not. I imagine it became too frustrating to settle any disputes about it.
(*) In the WDL, the players talk to each other with mics to coordinate strategies in game. The teams each have a substitute player, who takes the place of a teammate doesn't show up to the game. HumanBones used his sub player to spectate and keep a stopwatch for all the soulspheres and megaspheres that were picked up, so he could tell the players exactly when the items would respawn, which gave him a little bit of an edge. The sub player is considered a ghost player in this situation.

Yeah I always loved the WDL. I'm trying to find out if someone is gonna make a new competitive doom scene to fill in this void, but things are kind of up in the air as of right now.

I think in Quake Live you simply get a timer for all items so you don't have to count or anything? And that seems like a much better option than forcing the players to count in their heads or just rely on their gut feeling. I wonder if such a thing can be scripted in Doom.

There is script on zandronum where you can easy time the items. Well it was never considered it for cheating i was using it for years on zandronum. Just when you grab item you press key and when the item is about spawn you get msg on display. But this is not possible on odamex.
