Are there any musical genres that you would love to see make a comeback in a way that doesn't suck? Grunge, nu metal, acid jazz, ska, even disco? What would you love to see come back in an amazing way? For me, this would either be Grunge or Nu metal. I find both genres to have some great gems among all the shit. Nu Metal had this enjoyable edginess to it. For me, it captured the late 90s in a way that no other genre did. I mean, look at this crazy shit. Then grunge...oh grunge...to this day when I am feeling down, nothing makes me feel better than this: Why would I want this?! Am I nuts?! Maybe. But check out these recent tracks from artists in both genres. They sound great to me. I would love to see a revival of the genres I mentioned. Released in 2009
Released in 2014
Well, I guess this may unintentionally turn into a music nostalgia thread...so yeah, what music do you wish would make a comeback with new, great material?

Cool thread idea. I'm very grateful for how much music there already is to pick from. However, there are certainly some great genre defining bands that I wish more people would follow in their foot steps.
I didn't really like grunge growing up but I have a new found appreciation for it. I don't know if this really counts, but I listened to Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins on Joe Rogan recently. The dude is way smarter and deeper than I would have ever have given him credit for. I still don't particularly like the music that much, but I appreciate him a lot as a person. If I'm missing anything from music today, it's the sense of intelligence. Outside of the clothes they wear, most of our leading pop artists are some of the most dull and uninteresting people ever. The lyrics of most music I hear played on the radio today pretty blatantly just tell you to drink, dance, and fuck more often. There's rarely anything more to it. It's so disconnected from reality.
Also I miss number bands (Blink 182, Sum 41, etc.) for a reason I can't really explain any further than nostalgia.

Perhaps I will prepare a playlist for you...comprised only of number groups.
21 Piots 2Pac 36 Crazyfists Three 6 Mafia Five Finger Death Punch
Yeah, I'll think of more later...which is something to say when I don't really have any intent of doing so, but love to keep people wanting more.

I would like to see simplistic Doom midis make a comeback. The iwad ones are relatively basic for the most part, and somehow that minimalistic feel fits oldschool style maps perfectly. But current midi composers seem to be more interested in some mix of progressive rock, classic pieces, and arcade game music. The only exception I can think of right now is PRIMEVAL, who did an excellent job mimicking that old style in his soundtrack for Reverie.

I’d be happy with just good songs of any “genre” making a comeback really.

Hey hey, I heard nu metal in this thread.
There's a few awesome nu metal bands that never really took off past one hit song, but many of their other ones are better. There are SO MANY GEMS in that genre and people forget about them. Adema for one. They recently got back to their original lineup, including their vocalist, might even make a new album next year, who knows.
Would also like to see In Flames make a great comeback, their newer releases fucking suck.

I really... really... really... don't want to see a resurgence in nu metal unless it's like a little scene on the side with enough albums coming out and live shows that you guys can enjoy fully... without South Africa's entire music scene having to go through the dark ages of soulless riffless bands again (that we haven't fully recovered from). We had such interesting bands until that shit became popular. To pour salt on my wounds, when I made an effort to put up with it at bars and live shows I kept getting told to "crack a smile or something bro" when I genuinely was trying, heh. I'll stop here since I already sound enough like an elitist snob.. ;P
One of the South African bands that got lost in obscurity were these guys;
This album was limited to less than 20 copies and one of my ex-friends refused to sell it to me "becuz you don't sell classicks brah" *while showing me the horns* and 3 years later he sells it to a drug dealer for less than $1 and pretends it was stolen. It's impossible to find it, I don't think it's ever been on Ebay and even if it did; it's a cruel world out there where bidders feel no empathy for a traumatized and heart broken South African. :(

deathevokation -- you should make a 'deathevokation's now playing list' thread. I always like what you post. Honestly, everyone should make their own 'what im listening to thread' instead of having some catch-all threads for everyone to post in.

Emo, punk rock, ska and math rock still live on as good as always, I have no Message For The Arch-Vile.

Wow, I was expecting 2009 Alice in Chains to suck, but I'm digging it. It prompted me to pack a bowl. That's literally always a sign that the music is badass.
EDIT: I've been avoiding new Alice in Chains for YEARS.. Just kept the ancients in my playlist. But man, I love their new shit too, this is an awesome discovery!

I’m not sure if it’s 2009 AiC, but Voices is a pretty damn fine song:
Which reminds me, the Jar of Flies/Sap EPs are top tier music:

I've got "Black Gives Way To Blue" ('09) and "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here" ('13) as well as the classic "Dirt" ('92). I'd say the key difference between old Alice in Chains and the newer stuff I've heard is the distinction in tone between a kind of bitter angriness that lends songs like "Them Bones" a bit of energy and the more defeated bitterness of stuff like "Acid Bubble" and "Check My Brain" that gives the whole thing an air of a sigh of impotent loathing. I like most of it, all told, but then my mental space often wavers along the same lines.
As for stuff I'd like to see come back... In Flames, doing anything from "The Jester Race" to "Come Clarity" (although I can live without Whoracle and most of Soundtrack to Your Escape). Particularly as I'm seeing them live with Five Finger Death Punch in a couple of weeks and I've been told they've abandoned their older stuff entirely now in favour of whatever "A Sense of Purpose" ushered in. Then again, I've also been tol the 5FDP vocalist isn't on this tour, so it might be a disappointment all round! Still, punchy music should be fine whoever their stand-in is. I mean, Soilwork are in the right sort of area still, whilst I've recently discovered Mors Principium Est and Disarmonia Mundi, who also lean that way, but I feel In Flames were more consistently hitting the spot for me with that idea than anybody else. Perhaps it's just because they were my first band in the genre (With "Reroute to Remain", noless!).
